I’m assuming so. What was the MegaMarv ? I’m curious because I might try to cross it with something this winter.

If you look at old posts here...I believe the megamarv was a seed that Marv Meisner received from a grower in Canada. It was an old heirloom. After Marv grew it he named the variety MegaMarv since there was no other name to call it. I am sure that Marv will chime in and give more details. In my mind the MegaMarv is a variety separate from both Big Zac and Delicious.

MegaMarv is an heirloom tomato the seed of which I got from a grower at the Great Tomato Hunt in Canada. It had no name and so after growing it myself for about 5 years I decided to name it and give out some seeds. I have grown it to 5.51 pounds and some other growers have done better. I think one person in Canada long ago grew one over 7 pounds. It tastes pretty good and is a vigorous growing plant. Lots of people have liked it well enough to grow it and cross it with other heirlooms which is what Wixom did to make MegaDom..

Marv, are you still growing the MegaMarvs. Last summer, I made the observation of the Mega crosses that I tried, MegaDom, MegaZac and Megamutt, that all the plants with Mega in them grew taller, with wider spaced nodal lengths. They also seemed to be much more resistant to blight than the other varieties I had going. I am wondering if these are qualities that a pure MegaMarv exhibits.

Yes. MegaMarv does have these qualities. I believe the variety has not yet lived up to its potential. May that potential will be reached through a cross or maybe yet through the seed itself. Time will tell. I grow some MegaMarv every year. Right now I plan to grow some MegaMarv, some Domingo, some Delicious through the Hunt seed and, of course some Big Zac seeds through the Boudyo line and some MegaMarv crosses. I think MegaZac has some promise. We will see.

For me the megazac has been out performing the megadom by about 1/2 pound on average ! I didn't grow the megamarv last year but may try it again next year to compair it again to the megazac. Like most people i focused on the ones i had the best luck with and it was the megazac for me. I lost my winter tomatoes to spider might so i will replant this week. My goal is to cross more bigzac into my megazac and into a Domingo in hopes to increase tomato size.
