Noticed last night my indoor green tomato had developed tiny pin sized brown specks on bottom side. Today it had gotten worse but tomato seems to be growing. whats causing this and how do I correct it? thanks

Weird Wint (Tomatoes)

it is probably the early stages of Blossom End Rot, if I had to guess. need calcium chloride spray to keep it at bay, sprayed right on the fruit and lower leaves.

Post a pic...there’s a catfacing-like thing that goes on with these things and sometimes presents like ber...I haven’t read anything specific about this but I have a theory that the heavy pruning is causing it...at least outdoor...if it’s that, you could prolly still finish it

If the mater starts to get a little darker green color and almost looks like it’s wet it’s the start of BER - then little brown specs fill in until it’s a brown/black spot - don’t know if that helps but that is what BER has been for me

I have been getting the little brown spots on almost all of my indoor tomates. It is the start of BER for me. If you immediately spray the fruit with calcium chloride (Rot Stop) you can stop it. I used to spray the foliage too but the spray destroys the leaves. Maybe because I have sprayed at the wrong time of day. I haven't tried spraying at night. I spray the fruit every day..sometimes twice a day and the tomato seems to get past the BER stage. I am still trying to figure why BER is so much more of a problem indoors than outdoors. Nearly all of us this year have had an issue with it.

Interesting reading porkchop. I had read another scientific study of Abscisic acid. I have a small bottle of it in my freezer. Frozen it has a shelf life of two years. I was planning on doing some experimentation with these late tomato starts but ran out of time. I have noticed that BER is much more common on my plants immediately after I top them. Of the three plants I have remaining..so far 2 of them have gone thru the brown dot stage. Both are dried up and growing normally again. The third is just about to reach the stage when the brown spots normally appear. Trying a little different technique with this one.

Yup...after topping or a hard pruning?...that’s the culprit ...(I think)..keep us posted
