Lets hope that Dan can see his way clear to come back on BP and tell us at least some if not all of his growing techniques. Whoever it was that showed him no respect to the point that he stopped posting should at this point be feeling some shame. For the most part the growers here have been nontoxic toward others in the group but a few have not been. I have undergone attacks in the past but although I have stayed off for awhile I always have come back because the group as a whole has been respectful of one another's feelings. I recall having been told once to try my cereal in the morning with some urine in it as it would add to the taste. If Dan ever does decide to come back and undergoes any kind of negativity the person doing it should be banned from the site. If he does not come back, I for one cannot really blame him. One bad apple can spoil it for all. Whoever treated Dan poorly should clean up their act.

I think Dan disagreed with making additional teams and quit and took some flack from from porkchop about it. Not a big issue worth banning someone in my opinion but we are a pretty good group and hopefully no one is having a bad time here.

I thought I went over the line one time not with Dan though... I was truly sorry and apologized. Im thankful for the folks who do keep it fun and sometimes respect is very important.

The way I see it we should just be starting out with a new slate and agreeing to be nice. If someone is not, they should be called on it. Hopefully that would not be necessary. I don't think anyone has ever been banned here and I would hope it would never be necessary. I only brought it up as I felt it needed to be said. Comments some people might think are "cute" might not always be considered that way by the guy one the receiving end.

Why am I feeling like a serious topic is being treated like a joke? I am getting email on the side from people who feel they have been abused here but are afraid to post because they are not wanting to draw any negative attention to themselves. They are saying they have been bullied and abused by some of the posters in the past. Seriously, give a little thought before hitting the "Post Reply" button. Some growers may be a little more sensitive than others. It doesn't cost anything to be respectful and respect is like some other things, the way you get it is to give it. And I am through with this topic unless someone wants to be disrespectful to me or if they are disrespectful to someone else here who needs defending. I would not have brought this up if I did not respect all of you by thinking you would get it.

It is a good topic Marv and thank you for your thoughts. We are a wide variety of people on here. I have learned through life to let negativity roll off my back like water on a ducks back. That's just me. Some people take goofy sarcasm as a serious detriment to their character. I may look at it as humor. We cannot control how people react and feel. That's in their control. It works both ways..I noticed that people with greatest grower respect say the least. We all know they are. Thank you for the awareness Marv.

What if I told you that you that posts like this one are a deterrent for growers and they feel like they can't post because of how serious this online message board is taken? Rebel hits the nail on the head...works both ways. You are not going to make everyone happy here and telling people how to act is a deterrent for people as well. I get emails on the side too stating the exact opposite of what you are getting. I understand that some people come here are very serious people but also know, that some are not. I say it all the time..this is a hobby and hobbies are supposed to be fun. I understand peoples idea of fun are different but don't tell people how they should be having fun.

I think there is a difference between the fun and joking and what Marv thinks is lack of respect. It is not a question of having fun. If this site did not have fun,it would be a lesser site. It is more an awareness that people come to this board for many reasons. A red flag should go up, when it is sensed that posts are being made in animosity and antagonism.

just so I’m up to speed...what’s more disrespectful? ...nicknaming someone “drop out” , who after bending over backwards to make accommodations dropped out of a contest and a website when we were trying to get more new growers involved?...or telling clubs to take a hike when seed request are made...just wondering...

Marv, I think you accomplished something with this post. Everyone seems to consider your words and I don't think anyone here wants to disrespect anyone intentionally. I agree that personal attacks should be addressed. Thank you for the awareness and I know I will keep it in the back of my mind.

That being said, if anyone is offended, step one is tell the person who offended you privately. Why are people writing to Marv about their feelings being hurt by a third party? Being ultra-sensitive and talking of 'banning' can be worse for morale than raucous sarcasm. Everyone has their own personality and background, if people want to live in their bubbles then that is their choice.

Two different subjects, Porkchop...on the first...I believe the proper response as an organizer would be to say "that is your choice, and go forward to make the contest good"

on the second subject...the seed question is still being considered.
it is a touchy subject with Dan..so I am treading lightly

don't make assumptions...if he accepts my plan....some seeds should be available

they would not be at club auctions

but the GPC would receive the benefit from the seed sales. The GPC helps Dan and the tomato growers..ie "Early Tomato" and world record verification.

I am trying to be respectful and not judgemental, I do not know what the result will be

I like to joke around alot and use sarcasm in a fun way. If i feel that i irritated someone i will back off or apologize if nesesary.i think the joking around is one reason we have this close group here and try to keep things fresh ! I think that for the most part this group of people respect each other and help each other out alot. what happend in January was not what typicaly happens here.dan Sutherland is a quiet and private guy and he realy didnt like to share his secrets.we may not like it but it is what it is and we have to respect that. Most of the heavy hitters at pumpkin growing dont have diarys or chat on bp.but the show up at auctions to buy seeds. Fortunately their are people like ron wallace that have gone out of their way to help. It would be nice if everyone would share their knowledge like them but again it is what ot is !!!

How do you feel about growers who are going around winning multiple pumpkin contests and selling their pumpkins for big bucks? Just asking? Not saying I am for or against. Just wonder how you all feel?

Im good with it. To get into a 4000.lb club you have to go to other states to compete witch is encouraged by the gpc. I sell my tomato seeds on world class gardening and some people don't like that i sell seeds. For the most part the only people who are buying my seeds are people who don't know who i am or don't know how to find me. People who ask me i have given them away for free and i think close to 25-30% of the ppeople in this tomato contest got free seeds from me.
