I have never grown a tomato from seed. How deep do u start the seed and how much water is needed. thx to Wixom for the seeds.

1/4 inch into the soil with the end of a pencil. Cover with vermiculite. Add a little bit of water. Put on heating mat.

I sometimes sprout them in a cup of water.
Within a couple of days you should see a small white root.
Then what Wile says.
Usually up and off the heat mat and under the lights within a couple days.

My method..I soak in reverse osmosis water between 4-8 hours. After that, I have used 3 methods. Paper towel (moist squeezed really hard) in plastic bag, rooting cubes, and directly into soil/potting mix. I have not used extra heat with any of these methods. My grow room tends to stay about 75 degrees. With all methods, my germination rate is 90-95 %. In my experience tomatoes are not difficult to start from seed.

In case you are out of RO water,... you can use rainwater or simply tapwater, which preferably has been allowed to out-gas Chlorine overnight.
Many people put a small amount of Hydrogen peroxide and some soluble kelp in the water & soaking for 3 hours is generally adequate.
Everyone finds that higher temperatures is beneficial for earlier germination.
I recommend 85-87 degrees F.
If you have a heat mat with a thermostat, you’re good.
Otherwise, setting the container on top of the refrigerator or water heater will give the seeds a little more warmth.
I would also recommend you cover the top of the container with Saran Wrap to hold in the humidity.
Once you see some seedlings start to poke up out of your seedstarting medium, remove the wrap & place under a grow light.
From this point on, excess water is your enemy.
You can kill your young plants with kindness if you overwater & they develop damp-off.

I always use root riot organic starter cubes now. And a heat mat, and a closed dome container that keeps the humidity high, along with RO water for sure. my germination rates are quite good.
