Hi all. I'm hoping to find some giant tomato seeds to try next year. I have never grown the giants but I've read that the Delicious and Big Zac varieties are my best bet. Any other suggestions?
I would be willing to trade for some good stock if necessary. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've saved Big Zac seeds in the past, but because they're a hybrid and because pollinations aren't usually as controlled as with AGs, plants that are "off types" will usually appear. I found it's easier to just order seed from a place like "Totally Tomatoes".

Thanks for the info Paul. Am I to assume the Big Zac seeds purchased from a site like Totally Tomatoes will all be true to type?
Incidentally, I enjoyed your tomato growing article posted on this site. Lots of great info. Thanks!

Try "6 Pound Giants" from Organica Seeds...they are not hybrids and so they will not produce off types in successive generations if you plant the seeds you save. "1884" grows big too. Big Zacs were produced from crossing a Large Beefsteak variety with a large Pink heirloom variety (I think "German Pink")

...Big Zac hybrids grow huge on the first planting then go downhill from there.

I've grown Big Zac's for 5 years now. In the first year I would make them 25% of the tomatoe plants I put out. But it's to the point now where the Zac's are 75% of the plants I put out. Nice large fruit with a very good taste & very meaty..........Paul

And the second favorite I have is Mortgage Lifters. They aren't the prettiest of fruits , but they are hardy as Hell & set fruit right up till frost.
