Was looking through a lot of the posts on the forum and had an idea that I thought would be a good way to get some good genetic crosses going for giant cantelopes and figured I'd post it to see what others thought of the idea.

What would everyone think of all the participants of this contest doing something similar to the Giant veggie exchange at the end of this next year -- say we have 30 people by the time January rolls around - each one of us would then package 30 sets of the seeds we grow next year (say 3 or 4 seeds per pack)and mail them along with enough to cover return shipping to one person who then repacks them with one set from each grower and sends them back to each participant (so you send one pack for each grower and in return get back a set of seeds from each grower) - so everyone would then have a good selection of seeds for future years without having to send out a bunch of bubbles to a bunch of growers.

Nice to see that others think it is a good idea -- looks like so far everyone that has seen the thread is in so we'll wait a bit longer to see if others respond as well - figure even if there are a few participants in the contest that do not want to do this - I think we'll have enough participation to make it worthwhile.

Since treetop is away for a few days I'll wait till he gets back to see if he likes the idea and then start working on the best method of implementing this (looks like we already have a volunteer to handle the repackaging)

@pumpkin bell -- even if you don't get anything to grow (unlikely since Peace,Wayne is already offering up some good seeds to work with) I feel that if someone signs up to participate and gets skunked for the year that we should still include them in the exchange as long as they had signed up and cover the return postage. Since no one really knows what they'll have at the end of next season and a run of bad luck shouldn't keep them from participating. I'm pretty sure the others will feel the same.(after all the main goal here is to get more growers involved with growing lopes and share information on what works best so we can all get better results.)

Scott - I've got plenty of seeds from the 24lber I grew last year (Cantrell 36.28 x self) if you need some just send me an e-mail with your address and I'll put some in the mail to you. (Not the biggest melon out there but survived the month straight of 100+ degree temps with no misting or shade cover)

Glad to see you like the idea also tt - I figured there might be a few people that didn't want to participate but am glad to see there is quite a bit of interest. I'll check with Handy and make sure he actually wants to take on the job and see what works best for him as far as getting the seeds sent to him - figure out what the cost of postage would be needed etc. and then post a new sign up thread with the details then.

I'm thinking with it already being the holidays and this not really needing to be finalized right away probably waiting until after New Years and then getting sign ups through maybe mid February to give everyone time to decide if they want to participate (that way we also have a list of people that are in the contest - so we can check in with everyone as to whether they want to participate or not and not accidentally exclude anyone but still get a list of those participating before the growing starts.)

If anyone has ideas\suggestions on the best way to implement this feel free to E-mail me @ JDFanning@sbcglobal.net or post here.

HHG - I'll E-mail you after Xmas to see about setting this up then and we'll put together a sign up thread to get a list of everyone that wants to exchange seeds after next season finishes (I've got a list together of pretty much everyones E-mail addresses (think I'm missing only 1 or 2) from growers diaries and other posts on the forum - so once we get some details worked out we can E-mail those that have signed up for the contest to see if they want to participate in this or not ( figure it is not a requirement for being in the growing contest but we'll contact everyone just to make sure they are aware we are doing this and see how many we get to participate.) -- I'll be pretty busy tomorrow (and figure everyone else will be also) so I'll get started Sunday.

@Pumpkin Farm - the exchange is going to be at the end of the growing season next year (after everyone gets finished with the lopes they grow for treetop's little contest being set up for next season) - if you want to participate in it also be sure to sign up in the "any interest in a cantaloupe contest here?" thread - He has set the deadline for participation for next year for this January 1st so the deadline is approaching quickly ! - There is no fees for entering and the only requirements is to get a few pics of the fruit you grow and is mostly for fun and to get more interest in growing giant canteloupes - and if you need seeds there are several members that have extras for the asking so be sure to sign up.
