Hi all, just wondering what soil type cantaloupe prefer and is it similar to watermelons. I am thinking about having a go with both because I heard they like the heat better than pumpkins.
Also, what giant varieties should I aim to grow? any other tips would be appreciated as I am new to these.
Thanks,
Ben

BB I'm not sure what the best soil is for cantaloupes but My soil is very sandy. I grew a 45 pounder this year with very little care. They seem to like about the same thing as watermelons. As far as varieties Carolina Cross watermelons. I'm not sure if anybody knows the actual variety of cantaloupes we are growing. I have not found much info. on them. So i just call them giant cantaloupe we all seem to be growing the same variety .Hope this helps.

BB - from what I've read they Prefer warm, well-drained, Sandy or light-textured soils that warm quickly in spring (Soil temperatures below 50 F slow growth), high in organic matter with pH 6.5 to 7.5. (so pretty similar to Watermelons)Also consistent, plentiful moisture is needed until fruit is about the size of a tennis ball then you want to cut back on the watering a bit (seems the plant will store more moisture in the fruit if the soil is drying out a bit between waterings after the fruit is set - and you also get a better flavor if it is not watered too often during fruit growth.)

They definitely like sandy hot soils. Melons grown on sandy soil are usually nice and sweet. Watermelons like the heat too and have similar cultural requirements.
