Good spot for Q and A , One Q) i received is how many can you weigh? A)as many as you want, but at the end of the contest your biggest will be the one thats placed in weight and on the tape.
Q)when are we all going to weigh? A) you will weigh your lopes when you are ready or they are, everyone will be weighing when they are ready.
Q)how will everyone know you weighed your lopes?.
A)just post here when you added pics to your diary,me and brotherdave will check and mark you down.
Q)can i just enter for lenght or just weight?
A)NO, everyone will enter with the pics but first is weight and out of your biggest your also in for the tape but you cant enter for just one class or split lopes for different classes, your biggest at years end will be entered for weight, lenght, circumference. But please enter those pics even if you have weighed bigger people will be looking and to make this lope contest grow and get folks interested we need everyone to post those pics.
Q)how do i measure lenth
A)To keep it safe place the lope down in front of you,get a fabric tape run it from the bloosom scar edge up over the lope and down to the edge of the stem, tape will be touching the complete lope, take the pic. any other ? email me or place them here. thanks TREE

Q ) -- If I have one lope that weighs more but a second that is larger circumference can I enter the smaller weight to try for the circumference win instead of the overall weight or is it the true heaviest weight that should be entered in all cases ? (ie. say I have one lope that weighs 50lbs. but is a solid rock and another that weighs in at 48lbs. but is much larger size due to say a larger seed cavity inside - should I base my results on the 50lber. or is it OK to enter the 48lber to record the larger circumference\length as long as all 3 are from the same melon ?)

A) my best answer JD is since we are growing for giant your weight is key! and i would weigh all your lopes and let the biggest weight wise be your lope to place,BUT id enter the others as well not only to show others the tape but im sure folks are going to want seeds. And You never know what i may pull out of my sleeve for different classes at the seasons end LOL. Weigh and enter them all folks you never know. TREE

A)just to make sure everyone reads me, please weigh your lopes all with pics and tapes! to keep it simple and fair the weight is the contest but after that there is the tape and that give you three classes,iv already started getting names for first time lope growers, first time contest lope growers,so at the seasons end youll wish you has weighed them all in there is going to be lots of classes for everyone you just wont know it till the end. thanks treetop

Yeah I figured the same but just figured there might be some that ran into that dilemma so wanted to see what the official rule was --should definitely be an interesting season no matter what the results wind up being and should be a lot of fun.

How's about requiring a certified scale be used along with some verification? Just a thought.

Only problem with requiring a certified scale is most places will charge a fee to provide a verified receipt (unless you know the owner) and some will have it set so that getting a pic with the fruit on the scale with the weight displayed is difficult (ie. some mount the displays on a wall etc. so would require a distant shot with the scale and wall both in the pic) - plus from what I've seen if you know the person that runs the scale it is still easy to modify a weight if you want (they can easily set it to zero out at a certain weight to account for a pallet etc. so can also add a pound or 2 if desired) - so it really doesn't eliminate cheating if one wants to as HHG mentioned - Personally I think having the 3 pics ( weight, circumference, length) will provide enough info to see if a weight is within reason (might want to add a 4th pic of the melon sliced open afterwards to show wall thickness\seed cavity) - and maybe its just me but from what I've seen here in the forum most seem above cheating in a contest that is just for some friendly competition - so making everyone pay to get a certified weight certificate seems a little extreme (but if it is required I don't see a real problem doing it either - so if others feel it's needed that's fine by me as well)

We can wait and hear from everyone, But i think this is just a fun and helpful contest,my goal with starting it was simple just get folks interested in growing lopes again and as this page grows so dose your locale contest/weigh offs.and these great folks on here know lopes you scale and tape and we will know the truth LOL,THESE GREAT FOLKS DONT WANT TO JUST WIN THIS CONTEST THEY WANT THERE TOWN/STATE/WORLD title which will be certifide over and over again!i know i broke my state record this yr and i weighed that thing for folks and even held it in the fridge three weeks because a group wanted it for there contest. so if you cheat your going to look BAD in the long run. FOR THOSE that didnt know you can buy the little dig.scales on ebay if you want your own,i take mine to a locale produce store they dont charge and they like showing them around to the folks in the store, yal may have something like this in your area. treetop
