Can I grow more then 1 fruit per plant, or is it 1 for max size but greater chance of a blowup ?

Do they have a plant structure like melons with a main & finger vines?
Can I set on any of these vines for a 50lb+ fruit ?

Thanks

Similar plant structure to watermelons. I've only seen 1 female on one of these mains or fingers. It did not set but I didn't get any sets during that same time frame, too hot. The sides off of these fingers is where the females will be. Many times there will be 2 females in a row with the one closest to the main being the largest. Last year I split a bunch of my late lopes that had a poor watering schedule. I'd recommend 1 fruit with a consistent watering plan. I've grown multiple 35 & 40+ pounders on the same vine but it was not on purpose, you've seen my weed control. About 30-45 days from germination to pollination. Females keep showing up but I've not had much success with size beyond 10 ft out.

Dave has paid close attention to the time frames. I agree that I have never seen a female set on a main. I have grown two and one per plant with similar results in size. I think it is dependant on plant size and placement. Dave is correct consistent watering is very important. Growem like you do those watermelons you'll do great. Probably another world record.

Might add too that plant size is important. The plant will get very big but 100-125 sq ft where alot of people like them to be. Dave how big were most of your plants.

Closer to 200, but not as dense as watermelons.

With that short a growing time, I could do 2 plantings. Not that i have time in July to do a new plant ! LOL
More food for thought.

They are not as heat tolerant as watermelons in my opinion.. I think it is best to get fruit set early and forget about it in the summer heat . mine were about 100 sq. ft.

The 100 sq. ft. was not really by choice it was by rabbits..

I ussually have mine picked by first of August. Last year it hit tripple digits early and killed them.
