Thanks TT and thanks for organizing the contest. It is great to see all the new lope growers did so well. There were more big lopes grown this this year than ever before. Several state records and two European records. Congrats to everybody this year.

Not to good for me this year 16.2 lbs..lol I'm going back to the neglect growing method next year.. I grew a bunch of lopes this year but almost everyone of them split. The 16.2 is a good cross i think.. 8.0 Cantrell=( 64.8 Robb x Sibb) x 50.2 Schnicker= (64.8 Robb x self). If anyone is interested in seed let me know .Kirk

Wow that is a nice cross Kirk. The 8.0 Cantrell and 50 Schnicker are both proven producers too. Dave grew a really nice one on the 8.0 this year, had a really thick rind if I remember correctly.

Hey Kirk You ought to cross the 16.2 with your 45 or (48 Dawson, 35 Bright). Rind thickness of the 8's + girth of 50's + length of the 45's = Me begging you for one of those LOL

I think you are correct Chris that should be a really good seed. I can't wait to see what they look like. The two lines are very different, but if the strong points of each will come together look out. I may have a few extra plants next year LOL

The only thing i can think of is i just could'nt keep the fruit cool enough this year.. I hope that was the problem...

I think your right Kirk, 2ppd during peak growth is about tops before a split. the key for southern grower is lengthening time from pollination to ripening. Ambient tempreture seems to be the key to that much like tomatoes. We may have to play with planting dates or find ways to lower air temp around the lope. If temps hit 3 digits they are gonna get ripe if they have any age at all. Mine looked ugly when I picked them this year even with shade they had black and reddish color to them.

Most really big ones average alittle over 1 lb a day if you include all days from pollination to harvest. The difference in weight in the big lopes is in the days, 45,55,65 days. I think the gentics we have are improving the ability of the fruit to grow at a faster rate, because if you treat NCG seeds from the feed store the same they split a lower ppd. But still think lengthening the season is where we could really improve esspecially in the south.
