does the size of the immature fruit make a difference

not really, pollinate them all. Most will abort in the first couple days anyway, at least that's what always happens to me.

Josh is right don't be too picky with the lopes. A large percent will never set. Pollinate all you can, later cull to the one with the right shape and vine position.
