Last year I had a problem with vandels. My patch is awefully close to the road. Because of an easement on the property I cannot construct a perminent fence. But I can grow one!

After seeing how well Ken's fence of corn worked out, I would like to try my hand at it. I thought that it would be cool to include some giants in the wall though - keeping with the theme of the AG's.

Can anyone send me some Giant Corn or Sunflower Seeds. I promise to include shots of the wall in my diary entries this year.

Sorry to hear about your problems with vandals! Aren't you the one who experienced mysterious "splits" on your pumpkins (at all angles)overnight? Here's a harmless little "burglar alarm". When I was a kid, our Christmas lights kept being vandalized. My Dad hooked up an old dual car horn to a 12 volt battery, and ran a long string about 6" off the ground to a light switch mounted on top of a piece of conduit.(Which was driven into the ground.) I'll never forget the sound of those "dualies"going off, and I'm sure the perpetrator won't either, we never had another problem after that! (I'll bet a change of underwear was in order!)

Sounds good. I am hoping to run power out to the patch and put in a motion sensor light.

Thanks for the advice... I'll have to look into some type of an alarm... Now the neighbors will have to contend with the smells and sounds of the garden!

Hi, my name is Leisa and I'm from New Zealand. My email addy is lesax@infogen.net.nz and I was wondering how you got on with your giant corn seeds. If you were able to obtain some seeds I was wondering if you would be so kind as to let me know where from so I could get some too. (I love the advice about the lights and sounds in the garden, wouldn't it be great to be an observer of that!!) I live in a pine forest miles from anyone and anywhere so have all the space in the world to grow large pumpkins. I have only just put seeds in about 3-4 months ago, way too late for the local weigh in competition here, but my 3 children and I have great fun watching them grow. What I want to know is can they be eaten in the normal fashion?? Good luck!

Hi Soup,

I turns out that I didn't actually get any giant corn or sunflower seeds this year. Looks like I'll just plant normal seeds.

As far as eating an AG, I have never tried. I heard that they aren't nearly as sweet as a sugar pumpkin and they are very "fiberous" and tough.

Hope the Sunflowers work. I'm planting some at the end of the pumpkin plot to make some shade from about 3:30 to sundown when it gets 100 plus in the Sacramento Valley. Oh about the alarm, my husband has a beam going across our driveway, when a car, person or animal(neighbors horses) cross it a buzzer goes off in the bedroom and the 95 lb. doberman who sleeps on the bed sounds his own alarm.
