Hello is anyone else growing these? If so how are yours growing? Mine are 7 ft tall at this point and no sunflower at this time. Maybe soon.

Yo Polka,

I have one that is over 8 ft tall and showing no sign of a flower yet, the rest of mine are about 7 feet. None have a flower, though.

Ahab: can't understand why they didn't come up? maybe the birds are eating them? Sun flowers have become like a weed in my yard, besides the ones i planted they're popping up everywhere from the birds and the wind.

Thanks Alan J for the advice. I will go out tonight and put on the potash. The plants are so tall now I have to crane my neck up to see them. But since Im am only 5'3 it does not take a whole lot to make me have to look up at tall things.

My giants only made to the same height as me (just over 5'), and are beginning to flower. I did have a major insect problem shortly after planting, 90% of the seeds I planted didn't come up, and what did come the bugs or birds (never saw what was out there) chewed on the leaves. Started spraying the sunflowers with the same insectside I use for the pumpkins. Going to try again next and probably put them closer to the pumpkins for shade, any recommendations for seed types, or can anyone send me some seeds from your plants? ....Karen

My tallest is 10 ft. 3 inches and has started to flower. A few others are about 8ft but are really drooped over because the flower has grown so heavy. Is there any way to prevent this? Am I lacking a nutrient or fertilizer component? I have only fertilized with 15-30-15 this year. Thanks. --Bruiser

Bruiser-

My sunflowers are all about 10 feet tall also and drooping over because of big flowers. I took string and tied them to the stalk of another sunflower. This seems to be working so far. Keep in touch.

I have a mix of different Sunflower types in the garden, soem must be minis because they are only 2 ft, but not open yet. I spray the same Miracle grow that put on the pumpkins and one of the giants that were only a little over 5' shot up to approx 6'4" (hubby stood next to it) and hasn't flowered yet... Karen

I entered my sunflowers into our county fair. They were over 10 feet and I entered just two heads. Both measured 18 inches across.

The birds are eating the seeds right out of the sunflower heads that have already bloomed. The tall one hasn't bloomed yet, still growing. It was real windy yesterday, and the two tall ones bent over in the wind. The stalk is about 1 1/2 around, and cracked in the wind.

Mine biggest are 10 and 12 feet tall. It's realy funny looking, they dwarf my 6 foot tall fence.

My two tall one are still growing and not blooming yet. The tallest is at least 8' feet tall now. I have little ones coming up and blooming at about 8 -12" high, it is so ironic to see two sunflowers so different. I am also fertilizing these with Miracel grow whenever I fertilize the pumpkins.... Paul...I've tried other's giant sunflower seeds for 3 years now...they're not like pumpkins and squash where the pollinations are controlled.Your best bet, don't laugh, is Giant Grey Stripe off the shelf...consistaently 10 foot plus with big heads.....grown in fields of just Giant Grey Stripes, the pollinations ring true more often than someone growing ten in the yard....just my experience....2 cents worth....10 foot 4 is my max out of about 12 plants this year.............G

I think those are the ones I am growing. Not mammoth, I remember my son asking me why do they call them Giant Grey stripe, my tallest (of the only two tall ones that germinated)is now over 8', and still growing.

I discover why they are called Giant Grey Stripe. As the seeds mature inside the flower head they are developing grey stripe on the white seed. Karen
