I don't know, but in 1946, I am assuming there were no tropical varieties being grown like many of us are using today. Check out the video that shows pictures where world record holder Don Radda was using light deprivation techniques, etc.
What will it take for a new 30+ tall foot corn stalk?
What will it take?

Actually quite a few corn stalks were grown in the 30ft range in the 1940s, mainly in the Iowa, Illinois area. In recent years, a handful of growers have gotten close to the 30ft mark, so it might be a matter of time. A number of current tall corn growers use seeds from 1940s strains but they are generally from Mexico, Colombia or Ecuador. The Radda line might have been from Mexico. I don't know. Light deprivation is common in sunflower growing, but I guess it works for corn too.
