12 - 14 feet this year. I have no doubt would have been taller if we didn't have extreme drought this year

My sunfluwers got to be 13' 7" and probably would had been higher if I had tied them up better. I'm building a platform for next year. Spending the winter gathering materials.

Best corn I've seen that regularly produces ears & gets really tall is a accession of Olotillo-Tuxpeno from Mexico. The tallest I've produced of this race is Olotillo-Tuxpeno - 22 feet 3 inches. This plant tasseled & produced ears. (pic of stalk with tassel is a Olotillo-Tuxpeno) http://www.bigpumpkins.com/displayphoto.asp?pid=6308&gid=-28045 Generally, I get high teens to low 20's with Olotillo-Tuxpeno. The tallest races (generally mid-20s) I've seen are Tehua (Mexico) and Montanas (Columbia), but they generally don't get ears before frost. Other races that I've done well with are Uchima & Gallina from Ecuador. Tallest I've had with Jala was 20'1", but usually in mid-high teens. For popcorn, the best I've had is Pira Naranja plant w/ main stalk @ 19'2" w/ 19'10" tiller & 19'8" tiller

For information on different races of maize in Central & South American, check out Google under Book and do a search on 'Races of Maize' Best ones to look at are the Columbia and Ecuador books.

The amaranth in my pictures are Amaranthus australis (Giant Amaranth) which are natives of swamps in the south eastern United States. They commonly get 20 ft. tall. When I had the world record, it was 23'2" tall. Since then, the tallest I've had is 24'4" tall. This year, at my new place, my tallest was 22'9", with most 21-20 ft. tall. My friend in NY, Jesse Eldrid now has the current world record at 27'10". Someone I gave seeds to in Sweden had one at about 30'1", but Guinness doesn't list that one yet. Maybe he didn't get the record for some reason.

does your amaranth go to seed. I have been growing it in Canada for about 5 years but it freezes before I can get seeds . I have been doing cuttings to keep growing every year.I could sure use some new seeds if you have some. John Butler

I have plenty of seed. Send me a email at sunflower_info@yahoo.com and I can send you some. New Jersey is about the northern limit for seed production. Some years I get barely any seed, but other years I get bumper crops. My friend in NY State can't get seeds and he is about 3 hours north of me. I even get self-sown seedlings in the garden, but they won't get giant. If you are looking to save seed then I can give you some older seed I have of crosses of giant amaranth with tidalmarsh amaranth (A. cannabinus). They readily cross if you can time them and they are fully fertile. The cross grows faster and seeds earlier, but don't get quite as tall. high teens to low 20 ft. for those crosses. Tallest I've had is nearly 22 feet. Tidalmarsh amaranth look very similar to giant amaranth, but with a more slender appearance and they have larger seeds. Pure tidalmarsh amaranth grow mid to high teens. Tallest I've had is 18 feet and 16 feet wide. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Gallery/GalleryImg/amcan16ft_9_5_08.JPG
The native range of tidal marsh amaranth are much further north than giant amaranth: http://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=amca2

Another interesting cross is a very tall, red Amaranthus hybridus from Africa that goes to seed the same time as the giant amaranth. The tallest I've grown this red amaranth is 19'2".

I've only had a cross with the A. hybridus as the female and the A. australis as the male. The resulting cross is a very vigorous plant that looks very similar to the giant amaranth, but with red flowers and stalks that are not hollow; so the plants are extremely heavy. Generally they get in the low to mid 20 ft. range.

They are totally sterile and have never produced a seed after years of trying. They need less water than the giant amaranth and grow very quickly.

Thanks to everyone for your interest in my Tall Corn seeds! After sending lots of bubbles to individual growers and for Two seed exchanges I'm down to my personal supply for 2014. If I have ALREADY responded to your email request then proceed with sending me your bubble.
