Just looking for any tips on how to grow these. I'm guessing aggressive fertilizer and management like in pumpkins? In a large pot/bag or in the ground? any help would be appreciated! thanks!

I've never grown them, I'm trying some giant sunflowers this summer. I heard they need lots of sun and lots of water, I'm not sure what fertilizers they like,
Hope this helps :)

Have been told by the guy who sent me the seeds, that I will be growing this year...1st trick, start them inside, and keep em covered for a while, after planting outside, cause the birds will peck the seeds out of the ground, &/or peck a very small sprout out to get to what's left of the seed! In the ground for max growth, and support will be needed, when your plants get up over the 20' mark...LOL Hope you reach those heights, but support should be started early, and continued as it gets tall...not much wind, will bend & break a 10' tall plant. Peace, Wayne

Lots of water. High fertility. My guess would be you could not go wrong with excavating a moderately large pit roots are dense but don't extend as far as a pumpkin. I'm going to try digging 4 ft wide x 2 ft down and hilling the dirt up also. I bet a really large plant could use a 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft root ball. About a yard of dirt. Plant out multiple starts or seeds and select the stockiest seedlings as they begin to compete. The plant would likely tip if the soil remains loose though. In clay this might not be a problems but I'll probably stomp the surface down a little because my soil is almost half pumice and straw.

I have been growing them for about 6 or 8 years now. Most years I have had a 24" head. They love 46-0-0 but start out light and add more as they get taller.
Put a pipe in the ground to support them as they grow. When they start to head out support the stalk just below the head so it doesn't kink the stalk. The heads get about 25 lbs.
When they start to head out I give mine 2 gal's of water twice a day and two gal's of mixed 46-0-0 ( 2 TP ) mixed up every 7 days.
