Just wondering when to start my giant sunflower seeds. Any thoughts? In fact, general tips would be appreciated! Thanks

I planted mine yesterday. The seed pack says to wait until after danger of frost, but I just had to plant something! I'm pushing it a little, but what's gardening if not outdoor gambling? If they get zapped I'll just plant more.If they don't I'll have the first sunflower seeds on the block!

Chipmunks and squirrels are raised on sunflower seed. They know how to find them too! You may wish to consider some protection until they get onto their own roots and get established a little. There is plenty of time to grow them away from the frost threats. I direct seed them starting with the rule of thumb for missing last frost.

Hi Matthew,
I think it depends on what you are doing with them. If you are just planting a few. Then planting them now is OK. but you do need to protect them from frost. If your goal is tall and big heads then plant them around 10-12 inches apart. I think the planting depth is 3/4 inch, but i'm not sure of that.

if you are planting a lot and don't care to much about growing them as big as possible. Like for wind and/or shade protection then I'd wait a couple of weeks to plant. And plant them closer together, like 4-6 inches apart.

regardless they love 100% full sun is best and hot weather. 100°F doesn't phase them. Sometimes in the summer when they are taller wind and/or wet soil can cause them to lean or fall over. Mounding extra dirt around the base or tying them up to something can help.
