I was thinking of starting a newer small patch to grow some field pumpkins in. Full light is probably preferable by the plants. I'm looking for some user experiences. How much shade would be too much of a problem? In the Summer, this area would get early morning shade and then full sun the rest of the day. I'd speculate 40% of the daylight would be shade. Thank you for your input. I appreciate it.

Hahaha... User Experience... I'm at work; so that's on my mind. I meant grower experience. :)

Should not be a problem. I would be more concerned with excessive heat, inconsistant watering, cold or any other stress that will cause early ripening.

On my 301.5 AG of 2020 and the year before in the same spot the leaves on it were huge compared to what I had remembered was a huge leaf on a plant, so I do think that a plant makes up for limited light by growing its leaves larger to compensate;
I know this is the FP Growing Forum but I'll bet it is similar.
As can be seen here, the other thing to worry about was maybe caused by too many jumbo leaves? Still, whatta pumpkin - I'm trying to germinate a second SIX of them. First round was a no-go. Awwws...

Hey, everybody, here's an idea: Perhaps if a plant itself can only be in a certain area, there may be no restriction on allowing ONE vine to extend into an area nearby that has full sun all day, like a lifeline of light, lol. Just a thought, as each one of us used to be---eg

Id choose afternoon shade over morning shade but I'm thinking of running my pepo types in half shaded areas and that if the correct nutrition is available that this wont affect fruit size. But as noted above, any stresses will probably signal the plant to ripen the fruit straightaway, regardless of whether its in shade vs sun.

I grew my biggest one in a spot that had about four hours of sun a day. It was 97 pounds back in 2013. The same plant also grew another one that weighed 93 pounds. Not too bad.

I've never had a problem growing in partial shade last year my 165 was grown in lower light area, probably why it still had some green on the pumpkin after 60 days on the vine
