I am wondering if the problems on the 1965 Brandt 2015 were caused not by rot but rather by high turger pressure on the mature cells located in the styler end of the fruit resulting in the cells rupturing. The use of fans were after a time able to evaporate a sufficient amount of moisture from the fruit, relieving the turger pressure and halting the spread of the problem.

There is a section on berry split. This research was expanded and presented at the 2014 ASEV conference if I remember correctly. I believe they concluded most water leaves the fruit from xylem backflow, where it is transpired via leaf stomata. Take home message was high humidity or water on the canopy prevents stomatal transpiration, thus preventing xylem back flow, causing excessive turger pressure in the fruit, resulting in split... I'll try to find the abstract from the conference.
