I went to the Niagara weigh-off last year and it was a lot of fun. It was the first weigh-off that I ever attended and (despite the rain) it's what really got me hooked on the idea of growing a giant pumpkin this year. So, I especially recommend the Niagara weigh-off to those who are too far away to attend the Port Elgin event. Not only is it close to the border, as Drew points out, but it's only a short drive from the Greater Toronto Area.

My wife and I are wanting to attend your weigh off this Sat but the hotel I called said I need photo ID for my kids to cross the border. Is this true? here in the US we do not have such a thing....

Nezzie--we didn't need photo ID to take kids to the hotel in Victoria, B.C., but we definitely did need birth certificates to get them back into the U.S., and adults need birth certificates or passports (I only had my social security card and border patrol in Washington state gave me quite a hard time).

I can't see that being true. My kids don't have any photo ID's, just their birth certificates. I also live in a border city, Windsor/Detroit. I've never heard of that.
Just bring their ID's and that will be fine.

As fast as kids change and grow, they would need new photo id's every six months...

Hope you decide to attend

Yeah, I doubt it's true that you would be required to have photo ID for the kids. Just bring the best forms of ID that you have. But, if you get a real jerk for a customs officer (not often the case in terms of Canadian guards who do not even carry guns), they could really ruin your day by asking for it. I guess that they want to make sure that the kids you're travelling with are, in fact, yours.

Here's a link for an FAQ on the Canada Customs website that talks about travelling with kids in to Canada: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4161/rc4161-e.html#P141_4348

Anyway, I heard that by somthing like January 31st of 2007, Americans are going to need passports to enter Canada and visa versa as part of some sort of "smart border" plan. So, it's worth getting one. Obviously you can't do it by this Saturday. But, think about it for the future. And, visit Canada often :-)

I'll be coming down with Phil Joynson. Unfortunately I don't have a pumpkin to weigh due to splits. Weighed my only pumpkin last weekend in Port Elgin. Good luck to all that are bringing a pumpkin.

Photo ID is best for adults. Birth certificates are all that is required for children, unless they are not your own. In such cases a letter is also required from the child's guardian. Passports may soon be required if they don't sort out the details. It would be a sad day when Canadians & Americans can't freely travel across the border.
