Gardeners to Sponsor Giant Pumpkin Contest

The first annual "Giant Pumpkin Contest," to be held in conjunction with the annual Fall Festival, will give residents of the Pahrump Valley School District a chance to see who can grow the largest pumpkin in the Pahrump area.

Giant Pumpkin contests are a staple at county fairs in the Northeast and Midwest. The contests can get very intense and competitive, with secret formulas and closely guarded recipes.

The Giant Pumpkin Contest in Pahrump will offer ribbons to the heaviest pumpkins in three age categories, as well as a grand prize for the heaviest overall pumpkin. Contestants will be asked to certify that their pumpkins were grown within the school district.

The Pahrump Master Gardeners, together with the University of Nevada Extension office, will sponsor the event. The Master Gardeners are excited and want to host the Giant Pumpkin Contest to promote growing and gardening in the Pahrump area.

The entry deadline is July 5. Weigh-in and awards will be given Sept. 27. Full contest rules and entry forms are available at the Cooperative Extension Office, 1651 E. Calvada Blvd., or call 727-5532 for more information.

I love it when some group who doesn't know anything about us here at BigPumpkins.com, other existing big pumpkin weigh-offs and maybe a little about AG's puts together a contest. I found to one in a city near by in 2004. I called them before to make sure it was ok to show up. I brought my 906 lb fruit that was weighed a couple of weeks before. they had a mechanical grocery scale that went up to 300 lbs. :) I won $75 which was enough to cover lunch for the family and gas for the trip, so I was happy.
