Owensboro, Ky.

We are pleased to announce the 1st Annual Kentucky Atlantic Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off. (GPC Event) It will be held at Bear Wallow Farms in Nancy, Kentucky on Sat., Sept 29.
Bear Wallow Farms is a family friendly place that includes...hayrides, a corn maze, gem stone mining, a nature trail, petting zoo, buffalo, and a PKN CHUCKER!!!
Bear Wallow Farms
1225 Piney Grove Rd.
Nancy, Kentucky 42544
Being our first ever weigh-off, prize money is limited, but cash prizes will be given to at least the top 5. GPC Ribbons for the top 10 pumpkins. GPC Ribbon for the prettiest pumpkin....to be decided by a crowd vote, and a GPC Ribbon for the heaviest squash.
The local tourist bureau is offering some extra $$$ to help with expenses if we can show them some interest, both growers and spectators. No definite commitment is needed, but if you have interest in this event, and might have a giant to bring, or just want to bring the family to support this new venture, please respond here, or email me at wsmpeace@aol.com. Peace, Wayne
PS...Kudos to the GPC for all of the support to this new group.

LOL and YES, plans are in the works to include other giant veggies in the future, just too new to us to do it this year, although if you got a giant melon, ripe and ready for the scales....bring it and we will be sure it gets weighed in front of the HUGE crowd!!!
A few other details...Registration will be from 8 am till noon on Sat morning, and the weigh-off starting at 1pm. A $10 registration fee will be in effect, with all registration money being added to the prize fund.
Thanks all...Peace, Wayne

Will there be places to lodge near by motels and what not. Ill have to drive about 5 hours for the trip. Also is it a dry county?....or should I bring my own beer to enjoy that night after I win....just joking I got nothing but some nice svbs. I checked out their website it looks like it should be a good time. One other question are the growers that actually got something gonna have to bring a crew? Ive never been to a weigh off before. Thanks

Jason, Bear Wallow Farms is very near Somerset, Ky. which has plenty of accomodations available. I do NOT think that Somerset is in a dry county...matter of fact, I am positive it is wet. No crew needed, we will have, as all (or at least I assume all) weigh-off's have a lifting ring, and a forklift type piece of equipment to get LARGE pkns out of trucks and onto the scales...safe and sound!!!!!! Peace, Wayne

Pulaski County (home of Somerset) is dry. All of the counties around Lake Cumberland are dry. If you're coming from the South, you need to BYOB and make a stop in TN. Well, actually Somerset is "moist" - they serve in resturants. (we learned this the hard way on a weekend trip tot he lake last summer - the closest place was either TN or Lebanon KY or London.

http://www.abc.ky.gov/LISTWetDryCountiesinKentucky.htm

I'll post links and such later when I get them and some good directions. Your closest "big" places for accommodations are going to be Russell Springs/Jamestown or Somerset, just so you know. Nancy is practically is spot in the road, but a beautiful area (I grew up in the area - about 2-3 counties from where this is held).

KYJ, hoping you wil make the trip from Frankfort...rumors are of several 1K# pkns....would like for you to be one of our judges, considering how long you have been doing this thing at the Ky. St. Fair!!! Watcha think? Peace, Wayne

Thanks Wayne. That's what Frank was talking to me about yesterday at the KSF. I'll just have to get the formal ok from my superiors, but don't think it'll be a problem and work out some other details for you guys (scale companies and weights guys, too)

Pulaski County is dry as a chip. You'll have to buy your adult beverages in TN or Lebanon KY..London is dry but moist at some restraunts only. I will bring my watermelon but next year I will definitely grow a pumpkin. Ive been reading the diaries and cant hardly believe a pumpkin 700+ pounds at 40 days....my goodnesss... Well, hope to see everyone at Bear Wallow.

I will contribute $100 dollars to the watermelon weigh off.

I would also consider additional contributions for other large fruit & veggy entries,... cantalopes, tomatoes, long gourds, etc., shout out!

Is a skunk a fruit or veggy?

I think GPC by-laws lean towards the AG judges being AG growers....not that it matters that much at all in my humble opinion. Well, maybe just a little bit!

Jamie, thanks for the contribution, and now I guess we have a real "largest watermelon contest" going too. I contacted Anna Lucio and asked her to include this info with the press release. I assure you we will have an excellent set of judges who will judge all fruit impartially and fairly, and abide by all GPC Rules and Regulations. See ya at Bear Wallow. Peace, Wayne
PS...Jamie I think that pkns and watermelons will be enough for our first year...you and all are more than welcome to bring any large or unusual items, but no official contest for them. Hopefully next year we can expand into other items.

CBend, anna lucio, the lady who has run the AG weighoff at the Ky St. Fair...also known as kyjabber....has been a great help to our first ever GPC weighoff in Ky. this year. She has, thru her contacts at the KDA (Kentucky Department of Agriculture) had us listed on the KDA calender of events, and has had the PR folks she knows send out a press release about our weighoff!!! The way I understand the process is that it gets sent to all newspaper, radio, and tv stations in the state, each of those can do with it as they please, and most will prbly ignore it....a good idea for all of us in Ky, is to call our local newspaper, radio, and tv stations....and ask them if they saw the press release about the weighoff from the KDA!!!!!!!! Get the idea, if they say no....tell them about it, if they say yes, ask them why they have not been tellin about it!!!!!! Yahoo!!! Push for publicity!!!! Anna, has handed us a gold mine, and I think we...KY. growers....should dig a little to help get some of that gold...!!! Peace, Wayne

I have one question...I do plan on bringing my watermelon and say I win...will I be able to take my melon home or does it stay?? Ive had lots of fun growing the melon and have had many people visit my patch. thanks. Croley Bend

CB, it yers, you grew it, do with it as you please....if'n you got a lotta seeds from it...donating some of those seeds to the new Ky. group, for seed distribution pkgs. this fall would be a GREAT thing!!! We are hoping that all who bring pkns, and melons to weigh, will contribute some seeds, but it is not a requirement. Peace, Wayne

Frank Mudd was published in the Lexington Herald Leader a few weeks ago. Perhaps he can lend some advice?

If my watermelons hang on, I will bring them but I will exclude myself from the prize money if I were so fortunate to place. It's all about the braggin' rights! Or...the coveted Skunk Cap...LMAO.
