So being a former Kansas kid, I was wondering how the Kansas state fair weigh off went in Hutchison on Sept 4?

I don't think it was a good year for the experienced Kansas growers this year this link is all I can find?

I think there is still a weight off in Assaria kansas on October 4th I am thinking about entering one of my first year attempts 450lb estimated you can see pics in my diary I just posted them today so it might be a while before they are up.

I grew up in Kansas so I can publicly say that I think Assaria should change its name.

Manhattan, Riley County. That's a nice name for a town isn't it?

I agree with ya Vineman they should really think of a name change there.

I had the only semi large pumpkin this year at the fair. It was late and only pollination on the plant, all others aborted,3.5 small partial lobes , slow growing pumpkin. It was 652.7# about 61# heavy. It hasn't been a very good year here. My other pumpkin has dill line and cracks at 880# but still growing. Doug H., From Liberal Ks.

Doug have you ever been to the weight off in Assaria?

Yes , Last two years. They are wanting to have more pumpkins . I had heavist pumpkin last two years 680and 881 , Brian Stanley would have won last year but his pumpkin was vandalized, I think it was around 1200#, what a shame. I wont be going this year with the cracks . Its a good corn maze and they have Bison at the weigh off site ,a lot of families show up. Its just south of Salina. Its about a 250 mi drive for us but thats the closest weigh off. If you go it should be fun time.

You should go up to Downs, KS and steal the World Biggest Ball of Twine (actually I think that now it is the world's second biggest ball of twine) & paint it orange and take it to Assaria. Then after the weighoff you could take it to Liberal, KS and drop it off in the World's Largest Frying Pan. That would be some good Kansas fun! (Unfortunately in my youth our family vacations included these attractions and some that were even more exotic.)

Actually I think it is officially known as "The World's Largest Non-Stick Frying Pan."

I don't know about the largest frying pan ,But Liberal is known world wide for "The International Pancake Race" with Olney England, and "Land of Oz" exhibit with Dorthy's House etc.

I just googled it...and learned it is in Pittsfield, Maine. I guess it's not in Kansas anymore.

We thought about coming to Colo. Springs or Denver for a weigh off some day. I only have room for two pumpkins and I like taking one to state fair and maybe next year if I do better we can bring second one to Colorado.

Doug you should,I relize that in kansas its hard to get a club going due to small populations. But the growers here in colorado would welcome you and give you some awesome competition.
There are a few towns in kansas that have fall festivals wemmididdle in Scott Citty kansas. some swedish town in kansas that i cant rememnber the name. lol maybe you could start one of your own.

But you should plan on going to a weigh off in colorado next year, HEck make a weekend out of it.
