According to the Half Moon Bay pumpkin site they weigh the pumpkins on Monday, 10/12/09. Why is this? It would seem to me that if you are trying to spread the word about this sport you would want a maximum turnout, which I would say would be on a Saturday or Sunday.

My memory isn't great but I believe they've done that for years now. Just like the Pumpkin Show in Circleville weighing on Wednesday, it's tradition.
Both shows doing this for years & both Shows VERY well known. You put out a good product it doesn't matter when it is, folks will show up.

Half Moon Bay has always weighed off on Columbus Day. Their festival is held the following weekend so they have the week to advertise the giant pumpkin to draw more people to their festival. The winner of Half Moon Bay is the grand pooba on a float in the parade during the festival.
