Hey folks, I am getting (despite some one general bad luck predictions for the week before the weigh-off) a little confidence to get some of my pumpkins to a contest, and it would be nice, in my opinion, that all the European growers that use to write here in BP.com could meet in one big and profitable European Weigh-off. The location will be far from my farm, of course, as I live in the southwest corner of the continent, but I would take one week off from job and travel away with my wife and my "little round baby" to the chosen place.
Ideas about will be appreciated.

Don, as you know Jucker farmart hosts the German contest on 5 October followed my the "European" contest on 12 October. Presently they only take the winner of the German contest to the 12 October contest. Perhaps someone could talk to them about allowing other pumpkins out of Germany to attend the 12 October contest? I think that we could get quite a turn out their if that was allowed. The reason that the rules are setup that way right now is that they sponsor both contests to include prize money. Their game their rules, but, if someone talked to them perhaps they would agree to allow us German growers to attend both contests. By the way, any other grower from another country is allowed to take their pumpkin to the 12 October weigh off.

I think the "European" contest as they call it can be entered from all other countries. They had participants from Italy and France last year. Can´t think of any other official weigh-offs (apart from Germany) than Belgium. Maybe the belgium growers here on BP can give some input on this one.
We must be lucky there is at least one official contest to enter for Europe. Switzerland is almost in the center, so let´s say it´s a fair distance for all of us;-)
Don you´re better off than Owen and me. One of us has to win the German contest first....

Yes, I thought on Seegraben Jucker Farmart like a nice Contest option, but in my opinion, is an absolutely absurd rule that anyone from Italy, Spain, France, etc. could go there with his or her pumpkin and only one german grower can. Imagine: 10 french, 4 italians, 5, polish, 6 astrians, 12 belgiumd, 6 dutchs, 20 swis, 2 spanish and 1 german. Doesn't it sound odd?

sounds like they want to make sure they have pumpkins for the first weeks contest...so all the germans have to bring theirs if they want to go to the european championship....sounds like a lot of german pumpkin will be entered by different countries in the european championship. An extra week to grow and not tip you hand early...but fun is fun if the pumpkin is still sound 3 weeks is better then 1!!

Chuck, I don´t expect any more growth for early October over here and weather could get pretty ugly. October 5th is okay for me.
Don you´re right, but if one can´t win in the german contest, would you go to Switzerland then? I would not. They just find out what is the biggest one in Germany, and this one will be qualified for the european contest. For me it´s just another typical contest rule like in all these "big games".
Looking at the different climates in Europe the growing conditions can´t be compared. At the time they have tomatoes in Italy, my patch might still be deep freezed. I´m curious to see what difference this will make for the pumpkins...

I went to the jucker farmart Website and posted a question if it would be possible for all German pumpkins to go to the European weigh-off. The reply was that all German pumpkins are allowed to go to Switzerland this year! This was respectfully signed by:

I agree Chuck, it's the party, i.e. the enjoyment and togetheness that this sport brings that makes it so fun. Dangit, you work for 8 months you might as well enjoy the end of year celebrations, even if it isn't your pumpkin that is being celebrated!

OK, men! First thing I will do in September first when vacation end will be to ask for one week off (or two). See you at Seegraben then. Only hope I will be able to take there something big enough, at least we are trying. It will be fun!

Hi, men,
I hope I will see you in Seegreaben. I probably won't go there with a pumpkin but I would be happy to meet you and your monsters!
In Belgium, there is a weight off in Duisburg the 4th of october. I think it is an WPC organisation, or an organisation recognisez by WPC. You must know that european champion is Paul Boonen, a belgian grower.
I hope you will have bigpumpkins to win the competition.

don Q., i hope you make it all the way to the weigh in.
i have been reading your diary a lot and have followed
along in great interest because i have a couple possible
big ones too. you keep an excellent diary and i wish you
all the good luck. don't worry about stan and his
negative attitude saying they might split a week before
weigh in. this may be true based on his past experience,
but the way he states it is disencouraging and he knows it.
he thinks its funny, but it is in bad taste.
pumpkin envy? just try your best and that is all you can
do, and maybe supporting people will add a little karma to
your patch. shazzy.
