Think Big

Commack, NY

Okay gang, i posted this question once before, i did get some response, but i need more. I know you are all very busy, but this is important. Im currently in the process of organizing a new weighoff. As i suspected there are some hurdles to overcome surrounding the issue of prize money. If you could all take a couple of seconds to post what the prize structure at your weighoff is, it would be very helpful, and much appreciated.

thanks
Scott

I may be wrong but this is what Thanksgiving Point (Utah)has done the last two years

2001
1st-3rd place squash-nothing
2nd-10th place pumpkin - nothing
1st place - used car that I sold for 2300.00 not bad but leaves a bit to be desired if you had anything other then the largest pumpkin
Watermelon, tomato, gourd ect- nothing

2002
1st place Squash- 250.00 2nd a 3rd got a grab bag of mostly useless stuff.
1st place Pumpkin- 250.00 2nd and 3rd got a grab bag of mostly useless stuff.
1st place Watermelon 250.00- I don't think there was a second place.
Gourds, tomatoes, cantalope - nothing

To top it off they charged ten dollars per entry. They even charged me 20$ just to exhibit my two pumpkins that were disqualified. It doesn't take much to beat that prize schedule. There were about 30-40 pumpkins that people brought to enter despite the fees and payoff schedule. Just goes to show that most of us do this for the fun not for the money.

Smoky Lake, Alberta:

If I can remember correctly, this is how it was last year.

1st place pumpkin - $1500
2nd place - $800
There were smaller prizes all the way down to 10th, as well as $100 prizes for random weights between 50 pounds and 1000.

Squash prizes ranged from $400 - $50

Watermelon was anywhere from $200 - $25

Hope this helps!

weigh them at truck scales and sell them to garden stores.
and medical docs,and lawyers.

if you have some real big ones,,
auction them off for charity,,if you dont need money.
if you structure the auction to have prize cash,,,good thing.

give seed to the local 4h,garden club, garden store, etc,
to give away free.

have a pumpkin for the mayor of your local town.

tv guys/girls like inflated stories!!!lol
give/sell them a pumpkin,,,carve the station call letters on it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

knock on local biz doors and get donations!
free this and that,,,tie it into someting good.
youth assistance,,etc..
once you start the fever,,,they will spread the interest.
throw some cash in yourself,,

The Puyallup Fair (Western Washinton State) prize money was in in the range of 1st = $600, 2nd = $500, 3rd = $400 and then $50 for 4th place to 15th place pumpkin. I could be off $100 on the first three places.

I think the other weighoffs in the area go higher for the 1st three places, but don't give price money all the way to 15th place
