With the way the State Fair in Virginia treats the growers I think we could have another option. I just want to throw this idea out to see if there is any interest out there. If there was going to be a weighoff on the last saturday in September (same as the State Fair)in South Hill VA would any of you Southern boys be able to come? South Hill is right close to the VA/NC line on I-85.

It would be at Farmers Day so there would be a crowd of about 5000 there and some entertainment for the family. You could take your pumpkin home that day so it wouldnt interfere with any GPC weighoff you may want to go to the following weekend. I feel fairly confident I can get prize money similar to the State Fair prize money.

Whew! that would be a 900 mile round trip drive for me! Until I have my 1000 lber, I won't be treking that far away from home. We need to get a weigh-off going down here but nobody harvests at the same time! LOL! I wish you the best with it though Brent.

If I'd drive 708 miles roundtrip in one day to the VA State Fair, I think I could handle it.
Pencil me in if it gets set up, and if you could use some help.

708 miles? dude i'm glad i don't have to drive that far. i get 7 miles per gallon in my 1 ton rig. that would only be 101 gallons and cost me $151 at 1.5/gallon. lol

Brent in the passed I have place 5th 9th 7th 8th ..
So if I can have anything worth carring anywhere I will be there. If I get something like Tim had I would take it as fare as I could . Hell if I get one that big I might ride to Topfeild my self. Even if I don"t have anything I would ride to SouthHill. Just to see whats happen and to say hi.

I drove over 1000 miles round trip last weekend. Worth every single mile. I'd do it again next week if I could. That Wisconsin bunch is awesome!

Yea, my wife thought I was crazy and my daughter stole my pink ribbon when I got back!
I'd do it again though, for the right contest.
Charge us to get in and see our own pumpkins? VA State Fair ain't gonna have a contest much longer if they keep that up.

Now Allardt, they treat you good, nice lil' weigh-off.
Squat for money prizes but still a good time.

dollywood has a pumpkin carving and fall fest on oct 4.
i e-mailed the dollywood foundation head and she said they would call if they got interested.
seeing that they charge $2 for a small dixie cup of apple cider,it might not be a good place.

How about you Virginia boys driving down to Ga or SC for a weighoff? I'd think about starting one at our Pumpkintown SC Annual Festival(25th year this year with 35,000 attendance avg.) if others don't start one. BF

hey you

Greencastle, PA

I work at a garden center in Rockville, MD. We have a small festival every october with a straw maze and stuff, i could ask my boss if he's interested in hosting a weigh-off there. It's a little bit closer fr of the northern VA growers like Bryan Saylor and Beth Rado. if any of you areinterested in having a weigh-off there as well as a southern VA weigh-off let me know. We could make it on a different day so people could attend both weigh-offs. One could be the last week of sept. and the other could be the second week of oct., then growers could go to a gpc weigh-off as well on the first week of october. e-mail me if you're interested.

p.s. dolly parton's bras have probably been worn down too much to hold a very big pumpkin. maybe one of her new ones? you could lift them two at a time too.
