Assuming a successful harvest of viable seeds, I will be happy to share the seeds to those who will grow them. Club requests will be honored first then individuals. Lets keep the interest in heavy gourds growing! I'll give an update when the seeds are harvested.

The 279.5 was a controlled cross between 177 Westfall siblings.The pollinator gourd grew a 232 gourd.

Going Green

Doug's 1st place made my 2nd place and wife's 3rd palace look so tiny. It was a great day and Doug is a great grower. In Missouri he is consistently the one to beat!

Congratulations. I think this is about the 4th time the Guinness world record of Richards Wright's 231.5(1992)has been broken. Nice going. The gourd and watermelon weights might be very much a good competition with each other. I also if you have some extra seeds would appreciate some.

Hi, congratulations, we have a group here in East Texas very interested in growing giant bushel gourds and would love seeds from your gourd and other giant gourds; our daughter grew giant field pumpkins featured a couple of years ago in Martha Stewart Living Magazine. We have a garden bed dug eight feet deep back filled with logs, other organic amendments and Rhizogen where we would grow the gourds, at a local garden which shares with the community. Good News!
The 279.5 gourd was harvested 2 days ago and the seed count/quality is excellent. The seeds are drying and have not been test germinated, but I feel confident they should be viable. With more growers trying these great plants, 300+ lbs can happen next year! Doug

I agree, much credit goes out to Dan Westfall. He got the seed from a man in Kentucky back in 2003. Every year since then he has selected the largest gourds from his patch to continue and improve this line. I grew his 177 last year and was inundated with bushel gourds. I may have to give it another shot next year.

Chris and Doug I have some questions. Did you train your plant similar to an AG with fruits only allowed on a main vine? Did you limit the number of gourds on each plant? How many square feet did you allow each plant?

my largest (270 lb) was grown in 180 sq ft. I started to grow it like an AG but left too many Tertiary vines, so it became a big mess of vines. My fruit was set on a secondary on the 1st node on the secodary vine. The plant did get some females on the main, but they never grew as well as a secondary vine fruit.

i did limit the plant to 1 fruit, but there were some 100 lbs fruit that formed later in september after the big one had stoped. the plant grew till frost at the end of october. Very healthy, minium spraying.

better care, a more controlled grow like an AG, and i'm sure 350 lbs easy. Most of the growth came in 55 days, but it was still growing a little at 70. My peak was about 10 lbs a day.

I sure hope you will be growing bushel gourds in 2015. What you did in 2013 was remarkable given the quantity of gourds on your plants. This year both plants (232 + 279.5) had only 1 gourd per plant. The 279.5 covered an area around 450 sq. ft. The 232 covered 1100 sq. ft. All tertiary vines were removed. Fruit set was on secondaries close to the main vine ranging from 13-15' from the stump.
