Hi, last year we grew a successful giant bushel gourd here in East Texas in our educational community gardens. It was over 100 pounds but it had a very thin skin. We would like to grow some with much thicker skins for use for artwork. Does anyone have seeds available? Thanks so much.

The thin skinned gourds should thicken up if you leave them on the vine to fully ripen. In my experience the young ones that are harvested before they are fully ripe don't have a thick enough skin to dry and use. I tried to dry out my 263 from this year but the skin wasn't thick enough. It was still too young.

In Texas you certainly have a long enough season to get them mature and then to dry them.

Thank you so much, Jim Sherwood. I will email you shortly. We are very interested in seeds for extremely big gourds partly because the whole neighborhood was fascinated with watching the one we grew as it got larger. Concerning that one, it was growing well and then looked like something had chewed into it. It turned yellow overnight so we picked it and it was all mush inside. With scooping it out and drying it carefully, we were able to save it successfully. Its shell is fully hardened and a lovely golden brown.

Thanks so much, Tree Doctor. We will be sending you the padded envelope with postage for seeds. We would also greatly appreciate seeds from anyone else, would be happy to pay, to get at least one seed from a two hundred pound gourd if possible. Thanks.
