Marrow or summer squash are great to eat. When I can get seeds I always manage to grow a marrow equal to the weight the previous marrow grew. I prepare my soil the same as for pumpkin and do nothing about the vines. The fruit is self pollinating and therefore one should distance it from pumpkins, long gourd, bushel gourds etc. Otherwise you will have a cross next year! I cover my marrow with a tarp the same as I shade my pumpkin. You can see the 3 footer 37" in circumference, I grew this year in my diary under pumpkin farm.
