Is there any interest in starting a small contest??Im thinking maybe $35 will get you in 2 contests for the odd veggies. like carrot/cabbage/ tallest corn.Who would be willing to join up?It would be supply your own seeds. So I wouldn't be mailing them out.I would divide your $35 in to 2 contests.Payout would be like 90% of the fees. The more who join the bigger the prizes & more places we would pay.

you are going to get me confused bubba...i know i am interested in tomato, carrot and marrow contests. Too be honest these contests are more about fun for me than money. I know that you need to be compensated for your hard work in keeping track of these contests. I will be the first to enter the marrow competition....

westham...you asked for it...you got it

Robert Im thinking if I open this up to say 6 -8 different veggies.I will charge $35 & you can enter any 2 contests you want. I collect the $35 from each grower.$5 comes off the top for pay pal fess & a 1st place plaque. We then take $15 & put in in each contest you choose.Just ideas at this point & time.Maybe someone has a better way? I do however want to stick to the $35 fee.Im thinking 2 contests.I had to people suggest making it more affordable

The money will be based on how many enter each contest. If only 3 guys join. Then its $45 in the pot.I would think. We would only pay 1st place on that.If you get 10 guys we pay 3 places & so on.

Mark,I am not concerned about the financial issues...the cost to enter is very small compared to the cost of growing supplies i spend during the year. The value of having other growers trying the same vegetable as myself is well worth it. I grow for fun and the friendships that are formed. When you decide what my entry fee..just let me know and i will paypal it to you immediately. It is a very valuable service that you are offering the growers...competition beyond gpc

Please dont short change yourself for your time

I think we still can get the minimum number of entries for marrow. What do you think westham...is there any way to introduce a handicap correction into the contest. Such as by latitude, area average temp, average rainfall etc?

Experience level of growers, etc...if we could come up with a handicap addition or subtraction....we might make growing really even

i might vote that it should count...since it is called a marrow in the usa
interesting read about its history
nearly 200 years ago it was grown to size of 5-6 pounds
now it reaches 10-52 pounds

i am planning on two plants this year....one is Fortey marrow, the other Rebel Z
i wonder if the Rebel Z would qualify as marrow?

The Boston Marrow Squash is cucurbita maxima and not cucurbita pepo, meaning it is not a marrow but a squash. It will not cross with a marrow and should be disqualified at all weigh-offs. It's easy to tell. The Boston Marrow Squash has a soft stem (= maxima) while marrows have a hard stem (=pepo). No marrows are ever orange.
