A message board for orange pumpkin growers? (once in a while my one brain cell I have left comes up with a thought and I like to share, laugh) Probably would'nt be the least populated message board, just a thought. Thanks

It has been asked a couple times already, personally I think it's a good idea.

In the past 5 years I have seen alot more interest in the pursuit of the HD award. Many growers now grow just to pursue it. I think that the idea of a message board devoted to the orange might be a great idea. One thing i would like to be discussed is the criteria used to award the HD award. What percentage of the total score should weight, color, shape, skin texture be given.

When I first started growing in 2,007. Growing orange meant you weren't growing to win. Now, It is not uncommon to see some orange pretty pumpkins that are competitive at the weigh-offs.

There are already 38 message boards most of which don't get more than a handful of posts per year. I personally don't see why everything can't be discussed in one message board. It doesn't seem like there is a benefit into breaking it out into multiple boards that nobody ever looks at.

If i were gamble...i would place money that an orange board would be one of the more popular message boards...so many "small growers" just want to grow orange. And they all can. At the two weighoffs i went to....orange seeds were always in demand. Next year, i am growing what will be 4th generation selfed orange seed. I know it wont be in the top 50 for weights...but i hope to be in the top fifty for hd criteria. The interest is there for a devoted board.......

Of course I like the idea. My concern is that there is a bushel gourd forum with 396 posts, a scientific literature forum with 113 posts, a field pumpkin forum with 1300 posts, etc. Orange should be on the main stage not a side show IMO.

Capt 97 has some good points, maybe get rid of some of the never used boards especially that haven't been posted in over 1 year which there are a couple. I still enjoy the site either way.

BP members could have a vote for best HD winner of the year if it doesn't start to many arguments

National HD winner could be difficult to determine. The only way to judge would be from pictures. The ability of the photographer would definately play a role. I took many pictures of my HD winner this year. The different lighting intensities and angles really affected how the coloration of the pumpkin appeared. Depending on the lighting, it could appear anywhere from pale mottled to bright orange. So many other things that could affect the impact of a picture. I am not saying national award is impossible...just not as simple as what is the heaviest.

personally? i think any way you can honor the memory and accomplishments of a great human being such as howard dill should be explored. he is the closes thing to being the father of modern day giant pumpkins we could ever have. there may have been other early on in the hobby but howard took it all the way to the mom and pop gardens. im all in favor. pap

Bnot HD award used to be a award of the best orange fruit of the season. The gpc picked out the winner from photos. It was flawed because photos aren't the same as seeing the pumpkin in person. That's why the award was changed to best looking pumpkin at each contest where judging is in person.

thank you ken! I hope the orange growers of this board will honor the spirit of Howard Dill, and make this a great place to share thoughts. I wonder who is going to enter the first independent thread of this board?

Thanks Ken!!! I really like the forum title that was chosen. It honors Howard Dill, and specifies orange as well.

Very nice of you Ken. As far as i'm concerned this is the man who got this craze going by breeding the Dill Atlantic Giant.
