I am pretty new to the big orange growing community and I hope this question makes since. What do you think has the best potential to give a really big AG with really good orange color. orange x big or big x orange. Example I plan on growing the 1916 Barron and the 993 Vincent/McGill in 2016. Which do you think has the better really big/really orange potential for the future? The 1916 x 993 or the 993 x 1916.

I don't think it would matter but I would go with 993 x 1916. However I think you would be better off using the 1912 Carter or the 1817 McConkie with the 993.

Also check out the 1998 Jutras for size and color.

I think you are planning for 2017. If the orange gene is dominate, then it doesn,t matter in my opinion.I,m not sure of the offspring of the 993VG as to size. Jim

I like any big and orange with the male pollinator being the 2009. The majority seem to be orange.

It could go either way.The male has just as much influence as the female. So I dont think it matters.I would look for the shape you want to improve? stem length etc.The 2009 Wallace bred twice into my 1317 then the 1947 is still putting out orange. The female is strong.however I can see the shape of the 2009 carrying over in the fruit.2009 had a very strong influence on shape

Good question.

I like the orange on the female side, and the big on the male side. I guess because it seemed to work for the 359 Foss and 1317 Clementz. Although maybe if the reverse cross was done of the 359 and 1317, they would have produced just as well, or possibly better.

I think I'd go with the 993 X 1916 myself, for what that's worth LOL.

Yep, 359 is a good example. Engel x Wallace

And the 359 grows plenty big. Haist grew a 1533 beauty last year with 359 x self

After 30 years of pollinating giants, I think it is the female that needs to be the color you want carried on. Dark orange rules!

But for me, the shape is equally important and some of the new creations aren't that attractive.

Best for color and shape I have ever seen is the 811 Gerhardt but for many growers today that may not be big enough. Historically the 993, 772 Poirer and 1059 Vincent have been used for many great orange crosses.
Mark Clementz has recently had some nice orange crosses with excellent shape.

Don't think the same seed will give you the same results. My 1791 Holland gave me a beautifully shaped orange, smooth 1287 pounder in 2014 and the 1791 seed gave me a whitish 1314 in 2015.

Did a read correctly that most white kins are recessive and orange pollinators to white kins will make orange most of the time...
Another question for the orange guys... the 2017 Martin had an orange tint and was pollinated by the 1916... Do you think it may go big and orange?

I forgot to mention the 1374 Engel (359 Foss X 1048 Engel) should continue to grow some nice dark orange. Shannon is doing well with his orange crosses. I would like to cross that with the smoothness of my 1287 and see what we get.

I breed for Dark Orange, Smooth, Round Shape, Symmetry and to the chart. Some orange like to go real light. You have to look at what the male pollinators plant produced. Then compare them to others off the same seed if possible. The 359 Foss for me was a gut feeling. The 2009 was orange and symmetric

A appreciate all the replies everyone. I am leaning toward my female being my 823 ( 811 Gerhardt x 359 Foss) instead of using the 993. Just have to decide on what big orange pollinator I want to use.

Remember there is no guarantee when crossing orange with orange that it will result in orange. I crossed two really pretty smooth orange pumpkins once and the offspring was a ugly deep ribbed light/white orange pumpkin. I crossed 4 orange pumpkins with the 2009 and only 2 the 359 and 270 produced pretty orange offspring my 881 x 553 produced white to light orange.

I to have pollinated some very bright looking orange pumpkins, and the seeds produced White pumpkins?

If I remember right some of the 1317s did not grow Orange
they came out a pale pink?

I grew 2 1964 Ligget's. One was smooth skinned and bright orange, the second pumpkin was white and cantaloped.

I have found that most growers will choose to plant the seed that came out of the really orange pumpkin of a big x orange and reverse cross.

When I grew two 1332 wolfs in 2011 I called them the twins. One was a big orange Arnold shwartzenegger and the other a flat white Danny deveto. Thankfully I used the shwartzenegger 1332 to pollinate my 923 and not the other one. The 1332 grew 1217 and the 923 grew the 811 Gerhardt.

I agree with Bill on this one.. There is no guarantee that your orange cross will be orange.. This is why I try very hard lately not to cross anything into the gene pool that I think has a possibility of turning the odds further against getting what I am looking for..

Its all about Chromosomes pairing up.There is no way of knowing how it will play out.Just pure speculation. The 2017 could throw orange as the 2009 wallace father(1916) Is the same shape & color that went into my 1947.5 and its throwing orange.Jermey was asking. The 1317 throws creme colored about 15% of the time.I dont think therec are to many guaranteed anythings in growing pumpkins.
