I received a lot of seeds last year when I was looking for older seeds. unfortunately I did not do well germinating last year and ended up only getting five in the ground ( really hurt to not germinate the 500 Northrup). This year I have gibberellic acid coming and hope to do better soaking and filing. Have narrowed my selection to these 15 of which I plan on trying to germinate 8 and end up with four. I do not have any background in growing any of these seeds since I am going on my 5th year this year. What would be your top 5 from this list. You can use the numbers 1-15 so you don't have to type so much. any imput on the seed would also be appreciated. 1. 1290 Poirier 07 ( 772.2 Poirier x 500 Northrup 2. 981 Zunino 04 ( 1048 Companion x 1230 Daletas) 3. 898 Knauss 01 ( 1007 Brown x 1048 Cox) 4. 867 Mombert 00 ( 801.5 Stelts x 567.5 Mombert) 5. 860 Mombert 01 ( 940 Mombert x 723 Mombert) 6. 818.5 Snyder 09 ( 746 Snyder x 993 V/M) 7. 798 Lawson 08 ( 1101 Northrup x 730 Dill) 8. 774 Mombert 00 (801.5 Stelts x 567.5 Mombert) 9. 754 Schweigert 10 ( 110 Schweigert x 993 V/M) 10. 742 Breznick 00 (859 Mombert x self) 11. 643 McIntyre ( 750 McIntyre x 835 McIntyre) 12. 633 Mombert 01 (867 Mombert x 723 Bobier) 13. 631.4 Jaser 07 (1230 Daletas x 670 Diagle) 14. 500 Poirier 06 ( 1332 Werner x 500 Northrup) 15. 218 Sandercock 07 ( 689.5 Sandercock x 670 Daigle

Joe, I have always felt that the 500 Poirier has potential. It is the reverse cross of the 772 Poirier. The 772 was one of the nicest for orange color and shape.
The 981 Zunino has produced some nice ones too.

Joe - I wonder if some of the "oldies" will germinate. I have grown the 1290 Poirier, 898 Knauss and 754 Schweigert which all gave nice orange pumpkins. Tom

I got 7 out of 15 to germinate last year. Not a very good percentage. Hope to have better luck using gibberellic acid. Have seen some posts that say that helps.

Joe I germinated 2 melon seeds from 1982 and 1983 last year without ga3.... don't use too much or the plants will get very leggy

what Temp are you germinating at? upping the temp a little can often help with germination.

That 898 Knauss is a very rare seed, may not be another out there. I believe It's in the gene pool of practically every world record grown over the past several years. I've grown it 3 times was never very orange but always heavy! The 218 Sandercock is always orange, I've grown it at least 4 times and won 2 HD awards with it.

The 898 was a very sought after seed when I started growing giant pumpkins. I don't recall the auction values, but I'm guessing it fetched pretty penny back in the day. I agree with Dyberry Patch. It wasn't known as an orange producer that I know of. Like many seeds, it may have thrown a few nice orange ones if you got the luck of the draw.

I like # 12, Mombert was one of the names I remember for being orange before the 993 and 1059 took over and I know one from the 600's was known for nice ones. I also have some seeds from my first pumpkin to hit the scales, 793 Dill 08 x self. Was clean orange with no Calai dots and perfect bell shape. Mine are from 2010 but have somewhat older genetics behind the 793 if you wanna try those? http://www.pgpga.com/wo2010.htm was the 256 Trychta 10.

866 Mombert/774 Mombert/818 Snyder/631 Jaser/218 Sandercock/1290 Poirier. Also on the GA3, 300-500ppm is a good zone. I would stay more towards the 300ppm. 750ppm or higher, I've seen more issues with the plant. A soak of 6-12 hrs has worked well for me. But I do use other chemicals with the GA3, but I usually am trying to germinate much older seeds. Some good results, some not so good.

Joe I would trade you for that 898 Knauss, I have some orange stuff and I'd probably see if it germinated and if it did, I'd cross it as a genetic cross with the 1695 Gantner Let me know Eddy
