Been pretty slow on this board so here is a question.
I will have two patches this year ( besides all my commercials). One for big orange and one for classic orange. Big orange patch ( and I know some are a crap shoot for orange) are 2230.5 Wallace, 1810 Werner, 1385.5 H/J, 1971.5 Wolf, 2106 Schmitt, and 1937 Urena. Classic orange patch ( if they germinate) are 1059 v/M, 1048 Engel, 993 V/M, 811 Gerhardt, 777 Young, and 359 Foss. My plan is to pollinate the big oranges with the classic oranges to put deep orange into the big oranges. What crosses would you make?

1059 VMG with any of those, but particularly the 1385, 2230, or 1810.

1059 is still my favorite seed of all time. It grew great in the heat.

1059 v/m x 1810 Werner also 359 foss x 1810 Werner

It is always one you didn't mention. If I was going orange this year I would be crossing the 1501 Wagner x 1810 Werner. Other than that I don't think there is a bad combination.

ohhh orange genetics my favorite topic. Pay Attention, you can get lost easily as I try to explain

777 Young 2011 (993.2 V/M x 1059 V/M) 1059 was a 993.2 V/M x 904 Stelts 06. 904 had one of my favorites 1370 Rose 2003 x 1068 Wallace

1048 Engel 2012 (777 Young x Self) Start to my orange line.

359 Foss 13 was a 1048 Engel x 2009 Wallace. This Orange Power house has thrown a lot of Howard Dill Awards. Thank fully it caught my eye. Or would have been one of those never grown seeds

So here is my choice for diversity 811 Gerhardt because it is a 923 Gerhardt which has some awesome lineage with the 603.5 Mueller x 1332 Wolf. Which crosses back to the 904 Stelts and 1385 Jutras

So in the end, there is no wrong cross from your choices to continue the orange line. Now will the big orange questionable ones cooperate? That is another question.

oh the 1501 is pretty..hmm going to have to get some of those
I personally think my 1200Est 2016 (1912 Carter 15 x 1143 Engel 2015) is going to be my new go to. I will let you know the second Saturday of October, how my plan plays out.

I would consider using the 359 Foss as a pollinator for at lease one of the big orange. With the consistent orange color of the 359 and the 2009 genetics I think it is a good choice. I got my personal best with a 359 in the poorest part of my patch, so I consider it a potential big size producer.

I'd LOVE to see (and purchase) SELFED seeds of all the classic oranges you have listed! Therefore, SELF all of the classic oranges and if any 'seconds' or backups are kept, they should've been crossed with any OTHER of the classic oranges (like, 777 Young X 359 Foss = O.M.G.); (i see you have Blood Oranges in your past years' lineup, lol!) if any of the Big Oranges are already producing at least a few orangies already, like the 1810, ANY orange-producing pollinator SHOULD (although not for CERTAIN) reinforce that already-orange characteristic(s) (like, 1810 X 359).
In My Honest Opinion. As I had said years ago: 'Big and Ugly X Orange and Lovely' - But, if you START with Lovely...

Joseph, You need a Gansert and you’ll have many of the consistent orange covered.

pumpkinpal2, my 1047.5 is a selfed 359. It grew my HD winning 748. The 748 was pollinated with HD winning 1444 Halverson, which has been producing bright orange. I
will be growing both of those this year.

1501.5 is a beauty. Haven't looked at it till Shannon mentioned it. Haven't seen it on any auctions.
Luke. I definitely have Ganserts in my lineup but most of them or in my commercial patch. Still have the option of pollen from them or the ability to pollinate them with any of my big orange or classic oranges. 975.5 grew one of my prettiest pumpkins last year. It would be interesting to see who has the most HD winners as I am sure Norm has to be near the top if not the top.

The 1501.5 was distributed in the PGPGA seed distribution. I suspect it will be planted a few times this year. We will have one in the ground for sure.

agteacher look at the seed exchange board for Dans info if you want some. I'm not usually growing for orange but I saw this one in person and with the 359,2009,1495,777,1048,1059,993 in there its likely to be big and orange. It doesn't hurt that Dan is a nice guy too! :)

Is this turning into an ORANGEOFF???

Could be an expanded category AT the weighoffs:
HD1, HD2 and HD3 >>> equating to Gold, Silver and Bronze;

Iowegian---i almost broke my neck looking at the 748 on PumpkinFanatic.com, lol, and, don't the people walking by past the pumpkin LOOK like they're in a photo, or a mural?
i love noticing weird stuff, and IN the pic of the 1047.5,
check out the matching colors on the pumpkin, YOU, the lawnmower seat and the orange square on the lawn-vac----neat, huh?
in order to reference the 1047.5 TO the 748 on there, the first seed back from each may need more info, but at least i got a look at each of them! Jurassic Orange blasting out Classic Orange---wowza!----EG---cannot believe the 748...(!)

Cross the 811 Gerhardt and the 1048 Engel. They don’t have a SINGLE shared pumpkin in their family trees. Best of luck Joe.

If they germinate I would use the 1059 and 777 as polinators for everything.. Just the opinion of a senile old man..

I'd go with 1385 x 1810 and opposite for a chance at a big orange one

The 923 has grown everything from perfect to peanuts but all of them have been very orange.

Jim, Doing a remake of your 811 this year also since I have both the 923 and 1332.5. Hopefully I got a perfect 923. :)

I love a good orange discussion. I'm hoping to cross the 1385.5 H/J this year with my own 500 or 849, which descend largely from the 1059. My 500 has grown two HD winners for me, but I'm down to personal stash on that one. My 849 seems to throw even deeper orange.

My patch is similar to the OP's concept, some orange hopefuls and some true oranges. Hopefuls: 1385.5 H/J, 1937 Urena, and my own 992 which was grown on the 1385. True orange: my own 500, 849, and the 1533 Henkin.

I hope they both hit the genetic lottery then joe! The year I grew the 1332 wolf to 1217 lbs I had two 1332 plants in the patch that year. I used to joke that they were like the movie “twins”. One was Arnold shwartzenegger and the other was Danny Devito. The Danny devito pumpkin was white, lopsided and small while Arnold was big round and orange. I’m glad I chose the right one at pollination time to cross with the 923!

Good morning everyone. This season will be my official 2cd year at growing the giant orange. I squeezed a 804 out of store bought seeds from Menards last year. Aquired a few 2145mcmullen and 2145mcmullen x2009 Wallace this year. My 804 turned out surprising brilliant deep orange with very deep ridges in it. So I'm thinking crossing one way or tee other to gain size and color. Any ideas on which direction.? I'm not sure how to pay of picture of my 804. Any help on that?
