I definitely like the idea of having the growers vote on the winner. That is how Pawnee City did it and the way Bloomfield does it. And limiting it to Atlantic Giants is a good way to honor Howard Dill.

Well done on the rules. Now if the GPC would just denote the HD winners on your annual list of biggest pumpkins that would put the cherry on top.

I like it too. The other growers know what the challenge is to grow the prettiest. Much more than a non grower. I second adding the HD award to the weighoff results. I think it would not be a difficult addition, but would benefit the orange growers immensely. If someone is looking at seeds to plant..known HD winners would be easy to find.

I guess I am the only person who wants the public to choose. Always the odd man out. I am growing these to impress the public! To me... their opinion counts more. But shoot... its the gpc's award.
GPC is trying to serve growers and put growers first. And doing a great job lately.
Fyi, the GPC didnt say they are against the public choosing...
So... If I understand correctly, some growers probably view it as more fun to keep this award 'in house' amongst growers? I agree that's fun. But it does exclude the public from having that fun, though.

Figure skaters want the audience to enjoy their performances. Spectators like watching. But neither side thinks the uneducated and untalented crowd should pick the winner at the olympics.

Good advice. We implemented this in Vermont 2 years ago.

The public likes the olympics. They barely like giant pumpkin growing and if we stand around patting each other or ourselves on the back its even harder for them to be interested. People have smartphones. They have other entertainment options... We need to stay relevant. Kids, for example, are all too happy to pick the "biggest pretty" pumpkin. Dont need credentials or a degree.
It's my belief that Howard Dill wanted to please the public but yes I dont know if he would "let he public choose". Either way the award can recognize the continuation of his original effort.

How do you continue to please the public without ever asking them what they like? I hope someone out there appreciates my logic a little bit...

And the average grower does not know what it takes to grow one blossom down. That's a big part of my problem with growers voting, honestly... You guys dont know what it takes! (Engel's being the notable exception here.)
