Only looked back as far as 2012 ( except the 1610) so may be some older ones that make the list. again this was a quick look over the information I have so don't crucify me. :)

Good. I can get rid of that tie at the bottom. I knew I have missed some. Probably some from across the pond I don’t have

How many of those were chosen as HD and did not meet the criteria? But were chosen by the event. I would like to see a Points scoring system made based on Color, Symmetry and Size

Agreed Shannon. I put that disclaimer in my first post on the subject. I have never been to a weighoff ( my pumpkin business does not allow weekend trips) but have heard that more than once the recipient was not very orange. As we already know the color of the parent doesn’t mean an orange offspring. The subject was bought up and I had the time to do it. I don’t have the time though to do a color/shape rating and as important a rating of progeny.. Getting a knee replaced in March. Maybe during recovery I can look into that.

Actually I have been to a small local weighoff held at 4 on a Tuesday and usually only a couple big oranges there. Mostly a weighoff for kids.

This is really interesting Joe, really great. To me and a lot of others this is a leader board worth shooting for.
The most obvious thing is that the 1501 grew three of the top 10 and 4 of the top 20 overall. All of these except for the first and greatest one were either selfed or sibbed.
Meaning no disrespect to the growers of the pumpkins, just stating my thoughts and observations,
1817 McConkie was a decent but not great orange pumpkin that was really huge for its time. I grew the seed first year out and did not get a great pumpkin in either size or looks, I don't remember the circumstances of that plant.
1654 Martin this pumpkin was on my short list for 2020 but I don't have a spot for it. Really neat texture on that one but not super deep orange unless maybe the color washed out of all the pics I saw which is definitely possible.
1610 this one was also huge for it's time and had truly great shape and color but I do remember being turned off to it due to cantaloping in the ribs.
1561 in pictures looked really dark red/orange and good shiny skin however it was a long pancake.
1495.5 was a nice, tall, orange pumpkin with calai dots. But the blossom end of the pumpkin was a reclining beanbag. This plant was the pollinator of the 1146 Snyder, which was also a HD winner making it a HDxHD cross. The 1495.5 has had questionable results while the 1146 has been planted with good success.

Meant to say I don't remember the specific circumstances of growing the 1817 plant that led to the less than impressive results for me.

I agree with Shannon. I've seen several HD winners that were not necessarily HD contenders but there were no better HD pumpkins at the event. I think the HD award should be held at a higher standard rather then pick a so so looking pumpkin because there were no real HD's. I believe we are watering down the award the way we are judging them at this time.

The 1501 has definitely produced some really nice big oranges. I have not been able to get one of those seeds so have been collecting the selfed or sibbed progeny. The 1872 Sippel, 1654 Martin, and 1462 Brown are all on my short list. If I had a 1501 it would definitely be at the top of the list. It has produced a few off colors but has a higher percentage of orange progeny than most of the bigger seeds.

Orange neck is correct on the 1561, it was a low wide fruit that was very dark and glossy. I seem to have the best luck getting it to grow orange progeny as it has produced 2 more HD winners for me. 1 similar shape and color to momma(922.5), the other a bit blockier but same great color (964). All three were heavy to the chart the 964 being the best at +15%

Joe, We crossed our 1297 into a yellow orange 1501. The 1297 turned Into our 1215 HD winner. We will find out this year if it is a good cross.

If others could summarize their first hand experiences with either seeing the pumpkins on this list, or planting the seeds themselves, or seeing any progeny produced I would really like to hear more.

Email sent, Joe. What goes around comes around. Reeb sent me sends a couple of years ago which helped me out. Plus, Uhlmeyer and Terry personally hooked me up with enough seeds to fill my dance card this year.

The 1444 Halverson beat out my 1047.5 for the HD at Anamosa. It was a nice orange, had a deeply sunken blossom. I got a couple seeds from Travis and grew one the next year. I was growing a real nice dark orange, but I lost the plant to disease.

Thanks Joe for putting this together. I didn't grow last year and have been out of the loop. I won a VanderWeilen lot a couple years back to grow their 1991 which I ended up culling anyway. I just checked my stash and have a 1501 VanderWeilen that was part of that lot. I had no clue it produced a nice orange until I read this post. Thanks again!

Here is another one to make your list Joe: 1604 Robinson 2017 Howard Dill Winner which was a cross of 1969 Haist x 2145 McMullen. And that is a very nice large and heavy cross. The pics on Pumpkin Fanatic are pretty good. Kerry Gross donated this seed to our prize pool in the Fantasy Pumpkin Growers League. We also have a HD winning D.Gantner seed in the prize pool. If anyone is interested in details about the fantasy draft check out the premium members forum.

Looking at your list, the 1604 Robinson 2017 would be #9 all time heaviest HD Winners.

And I appreciate it very much. People on this site are the best. Thinking the 1501 x self or take a chance on 1501 x 1885.5 Werner. My knee replacement surgery was postponed and looks like reschedule would be right in pumpkin season. If that happens I will limp it out until winter.
