I noticed some white flies (tiny little moths about the size of the point of a pen) on one of my plants over the weekend. Are they a problem? I've been using Merit, which has kept the other flying insects away. Any advice would be appreciated.

Merit helps control White Flies. But only at one life stage (feeding adults & crawlers). To be effective, your control strategy has to include other MOA (modes of action) insecticides as well. Consider a low-dose pyrethroid also for adults & crawlers.
The trouble is that neither eggs nor the scale stage will be control either by contact or systemic insecticides. For them you'll need to use Superior Summer Oil & Insecticidal Soap.

But are white flies bad? If so what damage do the cause?

They will suck the life from your plant..It will take a week or so to rid your plant from these.I battled them for 2 weeks..Diazainon and sevin helped this year with them..Its not an overnight sucess.
