I am pretty sure my pumpkin Iris has a dill ring. I know what a dill ring looks like but not exactly why pumpkins get them and what they can do. Is the wall of the pumpkin where the dill ring is thin? i heard cracks can occur because of dill rings so should i be concerned? any info would be greatly appreciated.

a dill ring is an internal crack that runs perpendicular to the ribs of the pumpkin. generally, the pumpkin is significantly thinner at the ring. once its there, you can't do anything except hope it doesn't split. some say genetics cause them, others think environmental conditions cause them,as well as uneven or inconsistant watering/fertilization.
good luck scott

Hey farmer Scott! WAAASUUP? Hi Case! I've heard that if a dill ring appears late in the season,it's chances of "surviving" are better than if it shows up early on. According to Gerry Checkon(world record holder), her 1131 had Dill rings running all kinds of directions inside! kilr

waaaasuuuuuup!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
Thanks for the info, the part of Iris i tough was a dill ring i don't think is, i pushed on the spot and it was not really moveable so i don't think it is too thin there, she does have a little one about the circumfrence of a tennis ball, it is really noticeable but i don't think it is too threatening. Thanks again!
