Look in my diary for some pics. Any ideas? i'll be working with a lab hopefully this week, but i was wondering if any of you guys more experienced with disease issues might have some idea?
thanks Scott

Looks a lot like gummy stem blight. I had the same stuff two years ago.

just checked the pics. it's not a good sign. the way the vines look, i would almost say bacterial wilt, but that will progress through a plant, not hit random leaves (from what i understand / have seen). the white foamy stuff is what concerns me. i lost a stump to that last year, but that was my fault from leaving the hose run on the stump for too long.
good luck, and keep us updated.

Scott,
Call me.
Gummy Stem Blight is a brownish ooze.
Gummy Stem Blight: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/cucurbit/stem/17.4.html
The white foamy stuff is Sclerotinia Stem Blight aka "White Mold".

This is turning into an epedemic this year but we have the answer if you move fast.

i called the lab, basically its a joke. the guy told me that he would look at it under a microscope, and take a guess as to what it is. I dont have time for guessing. Im overnighting a sample tomorrow so we should know in a couple of days.

What kind of scope was he going to use. I use an electron microscope that can give you a percentage of all elements. So when he says he will put it under the scope. He might know what he is doing.

Linus......he very well might know what he's doing, but he actually said that he would "take a guess". That's not good enough for me. i need confirmation of the pathogen so that i can correct it. If his guess is wrong, and i try and correct for what he "thinks" it is, i could be ignoring the real problem.

I would call them & ask for a supervisor. Is this lab associated with Cornell?

As a matter of fact, i used you as an example and said that you walked in and got a diagnosis. I was told that they are not equipped to make an exact, positive diagnosis. The best that they can do is look at it under a microscope and "take a guess" as to what it might be.

If the staff is competent & a slide is made from fresh live diseased plant material then the pathologists findings are not a guess unless said pathologist is untrained or unexperienced. Who works at this place, interns or political appointments? No PhDs that's for sure.
You LI boys need a real lab. The people at this lab are idiots.
