I have finally seen/killed an SVB in person. I was at my bros patch and noticed a red thing flying around. Smacked it and noticed what it was (thanks to this board and Langevins book). We ended up killing 2 SVB's. Didnt see any eggs though. He has gotten cukes and now svb's while i have been lucky so far. I will be spraying anyway. Maybe my plants are so undesireable that no SVB would come near. Hmmmm. organic repellant.....ugly plants?

I have seen a few as well. Luckily the majority that I have seen have been dead. I guess my bug prevention is working. I am still keeping an eye out for those eggs, though. Is there a time when it is no longer "SVB season" and we can relax or will we be on guard until October?

Pumpkin mom what are you using as far as insecticides me and becks are interested in what others are using and application rates and such to control them. I have killed a total of 10 SVBs since I first spotted them. Funny thing is last yr I said to Becky no worries about svb as we had never seen one before. Now my fav thing is seeking and killing these little buggers.

On Monday, I bought Bayer Tree and shrub (Merit) at HD and put 3.5oz in 4 gal water drench over the 500sq/ft patch. But, prior to this week, I had been spraying Ortho Max (bifenthrin) once a week at 1.5oz in 2 gal. I don't want to over spray and pre-age the plant. So far, the leaves are still flexible. Sounds like you could use this. I'm not sure the $20 for the Merit is worth the money? Any thoughts on that? Greg

Well the SVB's that Dave saw in my patch are for real. I have found eggs on some of the vines on one of my plants. I have taken those off (the ones I could find). I also took off two leaf stems that had holes in them (with stuff that looked like saw dust around the hole) and I found larve in those stems.
I have sprayed with Ortho Max, but I am curious about the Merit. I think I read that Tremor mixed merit with water and poured it on vines and killed active borers in the vine. Would this work?
I don't know if I have other larve, but I don't want to take any other chances.

I have been using Spectracide Bug Stop Indoor Plus Outdoor. I spray once a week unless it rains, then more. I have also been sprinkling SEVIN every other week just to be sure.
