What kind of slugs are you talking about? We have this naked type brown-red ones that kill a young plant in one night. I saw them all around, but they don´t even take look at my pumpkins.

Toads will eat slugs. If have any around add them to your patch. Best natural insecticide for the garden.

DE is not poison it's Natural! it's made from the shells of microscopic animals and the DE cuts up the slugs and they dehydrate and die some stuff that's used in pool filters.

Saucers filled with beer (Bud Longnecks) placed around your patch might work. I saw that on a gardening program on PBS

Pappy - in my book that is called alcohol abuse. No way I'm sharin' with the slugs.
Ben - I'd stick with the slug bait & re-apply every week or so.

Beer really does work! I put down a tray of beer one night. When I came out the next morning, I found a couple of neighbors face down in the tray. They had squashed at least ten slugs!

I also use Diatomecious earth(DE). It does cut the slugs and snails like razor blades. If you do decide to use DE, be careful not to breathe the fine powder. I think i read something about it possibly causing lung cancer.
