Tonight while checking my plants I found what looks like clear gel like substance on the stem of one of my pumpkins. Its around the base of the stem. Anyone have any ideas, and what can I do about it. Thanks.

first find the crack and then apply some captan which will help dry it out. The captan will help keep any disease out while the dries and heals...chris

Bill, Some pumpkins seem to do that more than others. If there is a lot of gel, I usually remove it and apply some fungicide. You can use Captan like Chris says or spray or brush a little Daconil on that area...Joe P.

I just started having the same problem after all the rain we had here. I used a sulphur based funguside in the affected are. Now two other areas on the stem are oozing. I will keep applying the fungicide to these areas as well but how far do I let it go before I have complete stem rot or heaven forbib pumpkin rot?
Thanks,
Steve

Stevo, I had the same thing; multiple areas of the stem were oozing. Pay close attention to the stump and the vines. In my case the main split open and started oozing, at which point I realized it was all mushy. The stump was still quite firm, but not much good without the main. Hope you don't have the same problem.

Bruiser,
My stump is already history. Went to mush about two weeks ago. Have some of the vines buried and I guess my pumpkin is surviving on whats left. I don't think it's growing much anymore. Just hope it holds together on the vine for the duration.
