Im am having a hard time trying to pick what to use for the pests in my pumpkin patch this year. I want to kill the grubs in my patch, I want to take care of the cuke bettle and squash bug..both are rampant. So what do I look for..Do I just use a product that contains Imidacloprid, like Bayer season long grub control?? Do I also need to look into some Bifen..is Bifen a insect spray and the Grub control just a one time deal....as you can see Im really confused..Ive read and reread the posts and get more confused every time...please help me...Croley Bend

It is confusing that why there called pests. I would use both Imidacloprid the plant abosorbs so when Insects try to feed on it they die. Bifenthrin is a contact spray so when they come in contact with Bifenthrin residue they die. Im definetly usuing both products. One application of Bayer early May when I plant and then I plant to use Bifenthrin I/T every 10 days or so depending on rain. But I will also follow up with a application of Bayer or Merit if you will during June and July. Im gonna use Merit a couple times because It does last long but the plant also grows fast. Hope this helps a little.

You could also use garlic as a repellent for cuke beetles and then the others products to get the ones that aren't repelled.

"Yes" to the Imidacloprid. Apply it to the entire are the vines will cover the week before planting out & keep it moist. Repeat this process 6 weeks later. Granular doesn't work well for the second treatment. This will control Cucumber Beetles & Squash Bugs to a degree.
"Yes" also to Bifenthrin. You want to spay it as soon as Squash Vine Borers start to appear repeating every 2 weeks. This will also catch other pests missed by the Imidacloprid.
I have offered to wholesale Imidacloprid again this year 3 posts down:

This? Or did I miss it?
____begin clip________
"When it comes to pumpkins, on the organic side, avoid applying the very much touted Fish Fertilizers, Compost and Manure Teas and things like Molasses. Sugar additives because they're good at activating the soil biology. These will feed and promote Powdery Mildew, a leading disease threat of pumpkins and many other things.
Then you'll be forced to treat with fungicides on a steady basis and still fail to control the problem. Because you'll be steadily feeding it at the same time."
____end clip______
I don't get it.
Every world record grower these past 5+ years has strived for a biologically active soil. Are they all wrong? Would you care to explain how fish & molasses causes Powdery Mildew?
