When harvesting my biggest pumpkin, I found that a lot of the secondary vines had split and had huge knobby tan growths on the bottom sides. Any ideas on the cause? We had tremendous amounts of rain in May June an July: could that be the cause of the splits? and what could have caused the unusual gorwths?

Good Question...I get these too..I always thought it was an aging process since it usually occurs as the plant starts to shut down and the nights get cool. Whenever I see pictures of people pulling the plants up you see quite alot of vines with "Knuckles" on them.
