My plant is one month out now. Stem has new small crack on one side just below cotyledons. I went ahead and covered it with soil. Was that the right thing to do? thanks

I've been told that vertical splits aren't that serious since the plant transport nutrients around the outer walls but a vertical "crack" would be a problem. I had a stem split in my main vine which I just covered with soil and my plant is still growing nicely.

The same here, I just covered it with dirt and it seems to be doing ok.
