The soapy-water solution is more effective on the soft-bodies critters and has been practiced for many years. Much could depend on what stage of the insect life cycle you encounter when dealing with other shelled/exoskeleton critters. You might be well to consider adding 1 oz. of a d-Limonene orange oil to that same prepared solution and use that mix to go after the adult bugs or those with a waxy chiton that can be dissolved by the orange oil and allowing it and the soapy stuff to get inside the bugs defensive shield surface. Clearly a contact approach, any such solution must land ON the bug, it is not a preventative appplication with residual effect.
