Yesterday it was warm (78 degrees)here in western PA. The day before, I was turning my compost and descided to spread it out and let it dry a little for a day. I noticed yesterday that there were these yellow flies all over the compost. Alot of them were mating and I would think that maybe they are laying eggs in there, but I don't know that. These flies had yellow eyes and a yellow body, and their wings went straight back in which it looked as though they had a single wing. There wings DID NOT look like the V shape of a house fly. What are they and are they harmful to my compost? Lee

Thank you, I googled it and it sounds like they are actually good. Their larvae hatch as predators and eat other insects.
