Anyone who followed our earlier string knows that I've used spray, nematodes, and most effectively, a pocket knife and tweezers. Now that we've got a batch of new growth coming back in, does anyone know if we need to guard against a second generation of SVB's later this season?

Steve...we had a second generation come through in late summer 1999. Based upon Scott's findings of borers in early June and our hot and dry weather I would have to say that this year looks great for a second generation of borers....sorry to say, but burry...burry....spray....spray.......Glenn A.

I found more deadly Squash Borers today. Will Isotox, a systemic, work to kill them ?

That's what I was afraid of... time to bury more vines and break the spray back out.
Interesting side note: My pumpkins and Blue Hubbard Squash's were hit hard; it's pitiful to look at the remains of what used to be a verdant green grove. My zucchini were devastated... the SVB's totally girdled the plants and ate right through (big empty spot now where the zucchini used to be... more room for pumpkins if they come back). But I also have 2 different types of cucumbers growing right next to the pumpkins, and they both went totally unscathed; the bugs were completely uninterested. I wonder why?

These beasties have favorites.....Hubbard is known to be one of ther favorites and has been recommended as a trap crop in numerous articles and books. They like AG's. I had lots in Jack be Littles in 98. Zucchini is a favorite as is yellow squash. I have never had a borer in a cucumber plant..........just my 2 cents worth...G

Why do you say bury more vines???Does burying the vines do anything to stop the borers,,or make it harder to find them???

Borers won't lay eggs on vines they cant get to....better off losing a leaf stem than a main vine In my opinion........G

Jeff:
I'm certainly far from an expert, but I'm burying vines based on the good advice from this board...
(1) If they can't lay on them, they can't eat them, and (2) If they do get in, I'll have developed more secondary roots
