Need some help. This is my first year growing giant pumpkins. It has been going good until the pumpkin turned orange. It has pretty much quit growing and now I have to soft spots on the pumpkin stem a couple inches from the fruit. How can I fix this. The weigh off is 2 weeks away. Will it make it? The rest of pumpkin is hard as a rock. Thanks for the help.

I usually scrape out the soft stuff and treat it with sulfur or full strength Daconil. Some growers wipe it off with diluted bleach, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide before adding the fungicide, Keep the stem dry, put a fan on it if you can. If it stopped growing, try to keep it cool. Suspend a tarp above it for shade and to keep it dry. Don't cover it at night unless there is a chance of frost. As long as there is no damage, like a mouse hole, it should last several weeks. Sometimes they will start up growing again, especially if you get a big rain.

Captan works well for this, any nursery store would have it.
